Great flight tonight. Thanks to all of you who joined. High Altitude Flight:  Pilots: Eagle_Rising, Blackwolf, BadCrC. Sunrise and dynamic weather system made the scenery a dream to fly. Top of the (DCS) World. Elbruz mountain, 5600 meters. Incredible view for the Mi-8 pilots and troops One case of engine icing. Remember the anti icing controls for this aircraft. Several crashes with VRS: check wind before starting approach and always fly it headwind. High altitude means less power available. Also, remember IAS is decreasing with altitude with TAS constant. Gazelle Modele L testing: Pilots: Eagle_Rising, Blackwolf, Bobtheturd, BaDCrC. First attempts to fly the new Model L of the SA342 Gazelle. A nice set of Gazelles L ready to take off Testing Air/Air capability of the M261 Gun was a bit too tempting. BaDCrC kept flying as the two pilots were murdered by Eagle_Rising Looks like what's left of Blackwolf after his crash? What the hell is this? Blood? Hovering meeting The M261 gun has been tested against soft and light armored vehicles with deadly effects. T55/T72/T80 shots were less obvious. The rockets are a bit trickier to handle due to the recoil. Aiming at the center of the reticle does not work. Definitively the most difficult rotorwing to handle for auto rotations in DCS. Many many gazelles were destroyed during the exercise.

    July 8 at 2:09 am

CONVOY ESCORT 2016 Strategic situation Separatists from the Ajaria province are using the mountainous area south of Kutaisi as an outpost to train their forces and launch terrorist attacks in the region. A significant part of the Georgian army has been deployed south of Baghdati to hunt down the separatists but the extremely difficult and wild terrain in this area made it difficult so far to find the village they are using as a training camp. Terrorists are often mixing with the local population and only insertion of ground forces is capable of taking them out.  Tactical situation We are called from our main base at Kutaisi to escort a convoy of vehicles to the village of Kur Sairme from our outpost located at Tskaltashua, south of Baghdati. In the mean time, we lost contact with a second convoy on its way back. A Search & Rescue operation is immediately required. The entire mountainous area limited by Tskaltashua, Kur Sairme and Kani has been called “the death triangle” as we suffered multiple casualties whenever entering it. Full Briefing (Mandatory for the mission):  Briefing Escort 2016 What you must know before the mission: KA-50: Edit/enter coordinates on PVI-800, use ARK-22 and HSI Slave. Mi-8: Kneeboard/Timed Navigation/ Use ARK-9 ADF ( Mi 8MTV 2 Navigation guide)

So there is a actually a chance that I could fly a Huey!!!  http://www.armyav.org/

Pilots: Eagle_Rising (SA-342) Bobtheturd (SA-342) BaDCrC (SA-342) Blackwolf (UH-1H) who joined late in the mission. Flight time: 2 hours Mission evaluation: Success. All but one minor vehicle had been destroyed. No casualties and no damage on our side with all the choppers who made it back safely. Good communication, good radio procedures. ROE were properly applied. Engagement sequence and target priorities agreed during briefing was correctly followed. A good job overall.  Summary: Take off 2210 from BPC. Maintained successfully 30 meters height above the sea but got detected by enemy just before feet dry. 3 Su-25 sent to intercept us but were destroyed by the frigates. Tactical NOE flight, trail formation from W1 to W4 above the river where we deployed on battle positions Delta (Eagle-Rising), Echo and Foxtrot for BaDCrC and Bobtheturd. All units were in position before the arrival of the convoy 3km from the engagement point. Radio contact established with drone above. Bobtheturd and BaDCrC engaged the 2 Shilkas first. This stopped the convoy and multiple tangos on board deployed around it. This triggered an assault from the rebels troops hidden in the nearby woods. All hell broke loose. Gazelles kept shooting at the remaining armored vehicles. The convoy was mostly destoyed and very few enemy troops were still alive when the remaining vehicles tried to get away, leaving the survivors behind. Eagle_Rising had a SAS failure that prevent him from engaging all the targets but he succeeded to destroy one of the remaining truck on the move with a Hot 3. Then, as we all became Winchester, we regrouped over W4 then egress to the ship. Only 3 tangos still alive.

In this thread I will be going over basic helicopter fundamentals the goal being that with understanding the physics of helicopters you can better your flying ability. I am going to be posting the standard army training manuals (they really can be useful) but will also try to supplement them with videos and other media. I will also be happy to answer any question you may have please ask anything it benefits me too.  So I'm going to start out with this video series by Dustin from smarter every day it goes over very basic physics however some of it is a little over simplified for example retreating blade stall will not fix itself you will flip over on your back and most likely die but other than that it is a very good series.  Helicopter Physics- Smarter every day Dustin also has a great video relating to specifically autorotations that was very well done Strapped into a falling helicopter after you watch those videos and get a basic understanding of the physics it would not be a bad idea to check out fm 3-04.2-3 it may be a little dry but if you can understand it and apply it while flying it will definitely make you a better pilot .203 These are the basics for now I don't really expect anyone to read the entire .203 (I know I haven't) but I would behoove you to look over specific things like settling with power (VRS) autorotations and IGE vs OGE hovering   Next week we will be doing a training flight focusing on autorotations I will do my best to demonstrate and describe everything that is going on but reading ahead will help a lot.   if it is a success I can plan more base level training missions to discuss and practice some of the principles covered in the .203

Agree. Yes, as long as we are less than 5 at the same time flying, we are doing OK, except maybe the lack of brevity use. Beyond that number, we will need to split into different groups and coordinate the strikes. This might indeed require some comms practising. Also, this is when we might find Universradio software really useful and immersive.

Hi Die Hard and thanks for your honest/no BS presentation, As you might have read on the forum, the missions we are flying are all coop with a strong emphasis on making them as realistic as possible with correct use of radio communications, combat tactics and formations. There will most likely be no PvP missions. Being able to fly the Ka50 (or other choppers) and use the weapons and systems is only the minimum base required. Working efficiently in a real coop MP environment is 90% of what makes a good virtual pilot. Yes, the fact that you are not interested in participating at all in the life of this group except just flying the missions is a problem indeed. This will prevent you from really progressing within BSD. SO I am afraid you won't really find a real interest in the way we are flying here.

Pilots:  Eagle_Rising (UH-1H) Blackwolf (UH-1H) BaDCrC (SA342) Mission duration: 2 hours Briefing:  Operation Harmattan III - Day 3 Briefing Summary: The mission is a success. All downed pilots from last mission were extracted and the KIA ones were taken back to the aircraft carrier. One Huey damaged at departure while trying to take off with throttle at idle. Two Hueys lost during approach maneuvers (one VRS, another, well, see pictures) around the aircraft carrier but after the rescued personnel was brought back on the ship. Enemy contact: 1 Shilka and 1 BDRM were destroyed (BaDCrC). The enemy checkpoint was engaged by Eagle_Rising's side gunners on the M4 road but no confirmation of kills. 1 Huey suffered damage from flying too close to one of the no fly zones (Engine fire + loss of DC generator) but managed to RTB. Startup 2200 Local. Heavy rain and Thunderstorms. Overcast 3000ft. Light wind from the West. Viisibility>10km. Creepy guy staring while one of the Huey is starting up. LZs were marked with lighted T Shaped NATO signs. LZs were challenging to land on and difficult to spot without the coordinates. NADIR and the point of contact we picked up at  Aderbievka were precious help. Looking for the LZ3 were the last surviving pilot was waiting for us RTB: Eagle_Rising approaching to disembark the pilots while Blackwolf was preparing his approach. The boys are back. Eagle_Rising practicing an autorotation by night, during a storm on an aircraft carrier... Running landing looked good...  But a bit too long....

Good evening everyone and happy weekend I hope you guys made it through the week I know I just barely did. Anyway I have finally published the final version of my mission brief and set a tentative date for the 16th of July but that is depending on if we get enough pilots available that day. The briefing is in the link below Operation Goldeney  I've determined we need at a minimum of 2 Mi-8s and that's really pushing it as well as at least 2 ka-50/Sa342s. I'm really wanting to push for the full 10 pilots, I think it's going to be hard enough with just 10. I urge everyone to register ahead of time so that we can start planning for however many aircraft we have. Again let me know if there are any questions on the briefing I will be happy to explain my thought process (or lack of it). Alright gentlemen have a good weekend and a drink on me.

IDk about all of that. most of it is fixed wing related and kind of on a larger scale than we need. I do however think an SOP on lighting and radios couldn't hurt, if you go back through one of the aircrew training manuals (ATM) ch.6 has a lot of words and phrases that would help in radio brevity. Overall I think what we are doing in terms of briefing and execution is pretty good the only thing that I can think of is when we start flying in larger groups that's when we probably need to start thinking of splitting up the comms and practicing radio discipline.

I'll take a look when I get home Friday. The wifi at this motel isn't the best for downloads. I'd say as a former CO of a bomber squad that was active in Storm of War where you had to plan and work with other squads nothing is more madding than posting a plan and having members show up and ask "what are we doing?" Never going to the forum or reading the plan. I chalked it up to some members only have a few hours a week to play this hobby and have fun. Get to into it and they lose interest or just don't have the time. On the other hand having everyone on the same page with the how's and whats in a mission is nice too. For myself I have the time to be more involved other than just showing up at mission time. I would guess if it seemed to "hardcore" some would be recruits may not want to jump in and for others it may be just what they are looking for. Its a balance I guess. BK

I'm good with either. I do think that Zulu  (gmt) would be easier to coordinate since it is a constant. If you say the 15th at 0100z, then in my mind and probably most others, it means 2100L (est). Since we are all in different time zones I think Zulu works best.

I'm fine either way I just had a brain fart the other day thinking I was east coast (I'll be moving back the EST in a couple weeks so that shouldn't happen again) but Zulu time works and also we always used the next day on a flight plan if it is going to be night flight but other than for flight plans we usually would use local time.

So we have a lot of pros at BSD and I can hear often about the procedures used IRL. During my time at the French 3rd Squad, we were regularly invited to large campaigns by the 132nd virtual wing, a squad based in Northern Europe that, from my experience, classifies as "Hardcore simmers". We were ending up operating in environments of more than 40 aircraft, several nationalities from different squadrons across Europe and a team of controllers and JTAC/SCAR experts. No need to mention you were not supposed to show up at the beginning of the flight without having spent a couple of hours working your briefing, ATO, filling up your flight plans (on the website), knowing the identification procedures (AET-100 or Ramrods), frequencies plan and be fully trained on the CAS/SCAR ones (they were kind enough to provide the training too before the beginning of the campaigns). I was leaving the server after every flight pretty much exhausted. I enclosed here a few of the documents we had to study. I would be curious to know about you guys opinion for each of them. One of the campaign's SPINS: 132th OP Georgian Thunder SPINS v1 4 Range order for our training sessions: 132 OI 1 DUSHETI Range Order version 1 0 SOP of the rotarywings squad: 132 696th SOP Brevity: 132 TTP 4 Brevity v1 1  Ground Training: 132TH CAS Training

So there is still some confusions about when is the mission taking place as I am systematically using EST time, and some of you guys are on C.S.T or M.S.T. The idea was then to use Zulu time which sounded like a good idea. But after thinking about this, a mission on the 15th at 2100 EST would need to be proposed on the 16th at 0100 Z? Isn't this even worse? Or are we sticking with the right day, like the 15th for 0100 Zulu time? What do you guys think?

Approaching the enemy territory, tactical NOE flight , echelon left formation with Crosser and Eagle_Rising Pilots: Crosser (SA342) Eagle_Rising (SA342) BaDCrC (SA342) Blackwolf (UH-1H) Duration: 1.5 hour. Briefing:  Operation Harmattan III - Day 2 Briefing Take off from BPC at 2220 Local. Altitude constraint during feet wet (max 30 meters) was blown and as a result, the enemy launched 3 Su-25 to intercept us. Luckily, the frigates took care of them and we never had to worry about those aircraft as they were too busy avoiding the missiles shot at them. Ingress was quick once feet dry even though our IMEX Huey struggled a couple of time with the water being too close from his skids. Flew up from the delta along the river to battle position point, then deployed on locations Bravo, Delta and Foxtrot. Drone announced the incoming convoy that turned out to be quite big. 2 Shilkas were spotted but the 2 gazelles behind the fences at Bravo and Delta were immediately spotted. Eagle popped up but got a HOT3 misfire. BadCrC took down one Shilka while the second one aimed at Eagle to shot him down. Crosser was able to destroy the second Shilka. At this point the convoy stopped and a significant amount of troops disembarked. This is when the rebels, hidden in the forest nearby, chose to show up and ran downhill shooting all over the place. Enemy was prompt to fire back and it was a real show in the night. Better than 4th of July. Problem for the rebels was that we couldn't destroyed all the armored vehicles as we were missing Eagle's aircraft and both Crosser and BadCrc went Winchester very quickly. Since rebels were only equipped with AK47, they were also quickly wiped out even though they killed about 90% of the enemy troops. We called for BK to do a pass with his side gunners on the huey, and he put quite a show, wiping out a lot of what was left of the convoy. On his side, Crosser was trying to freak the enemy out by flying fast and low above the convoy. Gazelle illuminated by the vehicle burning in the night (god that is so gorgeous!!) Sadly enough, he crashed trying to stop the convoy by landing in front of them. But, although his co pilot was dead, he punched through the cockpit and ran into a nearby TOW hummer that was left by the rebels and started to pursue the remaining trucks and shoot at them. This deserves a medal! On his side, BK made a too close for comfort low altitude last pass and crashed in  nearby hill. So no IMEX available for the downed pilots (including BaDCrC who also made a bad move and crashed). Mission is a partial success. 6 trucks made it to Gelendzikh, 5 with ammo, 1 with fuel. All rebel troops were wiped out. We lost all of our aircraft but the pilots survived and were able to drive back to the shore with a humvee left, to be picked up by a sub. Let's do it again next time!

I went to the rift site did the test to see if I could run it..nope I'm missing 3 out of 5! The only thing that passed was my OS and RAM. Video card is a r7-290 not a r9 and I'm missing two of the 3.0 usb's..so I will have to upgrade a lot to even run it..oh well a 32 inch HDTV isn't that bad. Speaking of that here's my set up( yeah its messy I know). I should have held a phone to my ear for this one..can you hear me now? :P My other hobby: Some dive in Richmond VA, 2001.. Me and the wife backstage with Rick Springfield. Very nice guy and he put on a great show. I was never a fan, I'm more heavy metal..but it was a good show, for pop rock. I just learned to fly on instruments...   One for Crosser..Tj's don't need no stinking snow shovels! Its a Jeep thing. Oh I did say hold my beer but daymmm! hehe.

awesome appreciate the second pair of eyes on it I got rid of any mention of the Black Hawk but I can't find any good graphics of the Mi-8 so the uh-60 is taking its spot for that. also what was confusing most likely it was how I worded something.

Looks good overall, a few mentions of the UH-60's but minor stuff. There was somethings that I didn't understand at first but figured most of it out.

Pilots: Eagle_Rising (SA342) Crosser (SA342) BaDCrC (SA342) Flight duration: 1.5 hours Mission was a success: Fuel depot destroyed by Crosser Both radars detroyed by BaDCrC Ammo depot destroyed by Eagle 1 T55 and 1 BRDM destroyed by BaDCrC 1 Shilka destroyed by Crosser Take off from BPC at 2230 local. NOE flight below 50m was maintained until feet dry. (Next mission will be 30 as suggested by Crosser who found it too easy). Contact with Frigates JDV and JB. Both frigates engaged coastal defenses. All JDV targets were destroyed. JB frigate did not succeed in destroying all the AA defenses though. But none of the remaining engaged us as they could not see at night.Ennemy was totally caught off guard and the only reaction following the fuel depot destruction was some tangos jumping into a shilka to take us out. Fortunately, Crosser was fast enough to destroy it. RTB to BPC in pitch black night and low on fuel but all 3 choppers winchester. No casualties until Crosser killed Eagle's co pilot by landing a bit too close to him. Gazelle is already hard to spot during day, but it's a real challenge during night. Even with the formation lights on fully bright. Anti collision light helped a bit on RTB. Personally, RTB was more challenging than what I expected due to the total lack of visual reference outside except a few stars. Felt relieved when the skids gentl hit the carrier deck. From a tactical point of view, I ordered a deployement of the 3 choppers North and South of the Gelendzihk bay, which was good from a target scan point of view, but I am not sure if having each chopper flying without cover was how it should have been done though. Good there was no enemy we missed and left behind us. You guys thoughts/remarks welcome. Sorry, no screenshots. I was too concentrated on not hitting the sea. Again, the briefing was (and still is) available here:  Operation Harmattan III - Day 1 Briefing

testing out the strength of the mi-28s rotors they are surprisingly strong also am playing around with my oculus rift some more and I know there are a lot of naysayers of VR right now but honestly I think it is worth it. Even though it is pretty expensive right now having my dad (who is a former Huey driver by the way) fly the Huey made it worth it to me.  also it is a lot better than trying to use the army's VR which is 10x as expensive  here is a picture of the HMD it projects the image on the glass but it goes away once you look down at your instruments

Hi Vigilante (I suspected your real callsign was not Viglante! :) ).  Glad you finally made it to the website and the forum. Thanks for this presentation. Yes, I believe we can provide what you are looking for. The pilot population we have for the moment is a bit heterogeneous but as we are making more missions, we are getting used to fly together and it's getting more structured and procedural everyday. I think 80% of it by the way is serving, so you should get a lot of understanding about your availability. There is no strong requirement to fly a minimum per day or week, we are just trying to have at least one mission per week (well, so far it's almost only me proposing missions but I have good hopes that, from what I am hearing, I will get some help from the others soon). That's why by the way I am really insisting on knowing how to use the ME (not in a hardcore way with scripting and all that stuff, but if you are at the trigger level, you are most likely able to create a couple of fun missions). I'll try to set up quickly a intro flight for you but I set up 2 missions for this week and I am running a bit late for the one on Saturday night. Well, we can probably do something this coming Sunday if you are available. Again welcome to BSD!

Callsign: Vigilante Age: 28 Internet: Cable, 50 mbs Timezone: PST Availability: Week days are hard to work around with myself being in the military. I'm typically open in the evenings unless I have training to conduct. Weekends are easier to work around, I usually do my gaming in the evening.  Flight hours: Roughly 300 hours in the past 2 years I've played. Rotary wing is around 100 hours cumulatively for all currently released modules.  Mission editor: Very little, with little to no scripting. Just recently started playing with triggers and such.  Preferred birds: All of them! But if I had a choice, probably the Ka-50. Expectations w.r.t. BSD: Looking for a dedicated group that plays at a realistic level in the game. I've played DCS with many others before but it typically turns in to a cluster f***! I'm trying to find some sort of structure to what I do in DCS, and I believe this is the place.

It's not easy, I was helping Shu out last night with it in a quick test mission. They latest update news mentioned that they're changing the sensitivity of the inputs so I don't know if you want to get used to how it handles just yet. Might need to relearn it all over again whenever the new patch hits home. However, Shu and I did have some good fun last night. I got a decent video of him learning to fire the HOT3, on the ground...infront of my canopy haha.

Those are a couple of years old. Not really cool I guess (compared to a Comanche!) but interesting considering the latest DCS module came out a few weeks ago. And also, these are not the kind of aircraft you can easily see in an airshow in the US. I took these pictures during an open event at a nearby airbase a couple of miles away from my home. And that's me! I am a 6'3" guy, so that's giving you an idea of the space available in a Gazelle. The ancestor of the Gazelle, an Alouette III. I think it still holds the altitude world record with a chopper, but I can be wrong.

Effective today 06/05/2016. Following his participation in Blackwolf's mission, his submission of two mission he created, and the positive assessment I received from BSD members, Civilian Bobthethurd is promoted directly to Junior Lieutenant and awarded with the status of Pilot and full member of the Blacksharkden. Effective today 06/05/2016. We hope to see you both often in flight and to propose many other missions to the community in the near future. (Bob, remember to fill your logbook with the hours you flew, the number of missions you took part in and the missions you proposed so we can keep track of involvement). Blackwolf, you should have been able to create a mission even with your trainee status. We need to see that with you. It's not normal. We are all waiting for you at the mess. Hi bob and welcome to BSD. yes, we meant your callsign, not your real name indeed. Thanks for your presemtation. It's interresting to see that we are getting people into rotorheads thanks to the Gazelle and not the usual Kamov (that said, we have pilots here flying exclusively the Mi8). Putting down some targets in the ME is often the only thing required to start a good mission. You should be able to propose your first mission in no time. We are looking at making flights as immersive as possible without turning off people from flying by being ultra hardcore. So procedures and proper use of brievety are seeked (might take a little bit more practise for some of us but we are all here to learn from the others). We are lucky to have some real life military pilots in our ranks so, once they are done bitching about who is best between army, air force and navy, they are giving pretty good advices. :). I am traveling this week until thursday. I am usually setting up a quick intro flight for newcomers to get to know them, but since I'll be a bit busy this month traveling, feel free to enrol in any mission that other members are setting up and I'll get their feedback about you anyway. Once your first flight done, and assuming you like the way we are flying here, you'll become a trainee until you propose a mission for the community. A that point you'll become a full memnber of BSD.

Hours: Probably a couple hundred in the A-10, thirty or forty in UH-1H, about ten now in the Gazelle. Another twenty or so between TF-51 and SU-25T. Editor: Very meager experience. Mostly I just put down targets in interesting places to use for practice and figuring out what I should and should not engage in different aircraft. Ride: The Gazelle is everything that is good about everything, and if you disagree we'll fight. Like men. Expectations: Just looking for people to play with. If you guys are more into hardcore simulation that just makes things better. Pilots: Shurugal (Huey) Eagle_Rising (Huey) Blackwolf (Huey) Crosser (Gazelle) BadCrC (Gazelle) Total mission time: 3 hours Was really fun tonight with 5 choppers flying, it was great. Eagle_Rising, hope you'll find a fix for your disconnection problems. Blackwolf, you did pretty well with so few hours on the Huey. Remember though that plummeting from 4000 meters towards the ground is not something your rotor likes usually :) First time for me to fly a joint mission with Hueys and Gazelles and I have to say those two match pretty well with similar cruise speeds and complementary weapons. Mission 1: Harvest time 30 km navigation north with Gazelles doing the navigation with NADIR followed by Hueys. Found the camp in a clearing in the middle of the woods. The 2 gazelles took out the watch towers while the hueys were cleaning up tangos and trucks with miniguns. No mid air collisions so I guess there was some good coordination. Success. Mission 2: You Shall not pass 15 km Navigation West with a 7 minutes timing to intercept a convoy before they are reaching the border. We flew straight and were kinda caught by surprise by the two Zu-23 on truck that were part of the convoy as we popped up from the edge of the mountain line only 2 km away from them.  Probably need to be more careful next time. One huey down. A second one damaged. Co pilot killed. But all the vehicles were destroyed. Success. We lost the last Huey on RTB while he was trying to wash out the blood inside his cockpit by taking a dip inside the nearby lake. Mission 3: Industrial Strike (+ Mission 4: Cocaine Airlines) 40km navigation West. We were caught by surprise when JTAC announced two Mi-8 inbound to intercept while we were flying towards the initial target. Eagle_Rising showed us his skill with the Huey by taking down the two Hips alone with its mini guns. We then re deployed around the industrial complex and most of us took heavy fire from Zu-23 both enclosed and on truck. I lost my weapon officer but I was still able to fly. Eagle_Rising went Winchester and still got two kills by landing on two tangos. Impressive! :) Too bad for the VRS at the end. The industrial complex was cleaned from enemy activity but we lacked firepower to take down the facilities. Still a nice success. RTB 40km NOE with the two remaining Gazelles. Lost one while Crosser was demonstrating the barrel roll capability of this aircraft. Lost the second one after a hard touch down at the FARP. Although we lost all our machines and pilots, our action was a huge blow to the drug traffic activity in South Ossetia. Congrats! ;)

ya that's what I figured with the briefings but I thought I might as well do something with all the free time I've had lately but at least now we have a template if anyone wants to make one of their own. As for the mission editing I'm watching some youtube videos now but I will let you know if I need help.

I completely understand how time consuming these things are, while it gives an immense amount of information and is more "true to life"; I don't know if the general group of people would care to read everything to it's fullest or get the full effect. It could be a good poll to put up however. If you need help with mission editing/building and the triggers I might be able to help you with them, PM me or we can coord a time block in TS to hash things out.

haha ya I left off the FOUO intentionally and I guess I could make an AAR after we do the mission depending on how it goes but I haven't really finish the AMB yet. There are still a lot of rough spot in that power point and not to mention the actual mission editing I need to do.  But if you guys are actually into this kind of stuff we could make a planning cell where everyone just works on one specific part. idk how serious you guys are but I know I couldn't do this by myself for every mission once I go back to work.

Wow. I just love this kind of brief. I know it takes a significant amount of time but that's a real pleasure to prepare a mission with this level of detail. Maybe I should think about a way to upload missions briefings. You can submit a document today to be uploaded into the library either through a link :  Briefing Goldeneye by Eagle_Rising Or by uploading the file itself: Operation Chammal But it usually needs to be approved once submitted. So it is not ideal.

So I've been working on a mission lately and I thought I would share my progress. It's pretty much your basic air assault mission with the mi-8 with ka-50's and gazelles providing security. I still need to figure out all the triggers and smooth out a few things here and there but if anyone has a recommendations or suggestions it would be much appreciated. also I thought it would be cool to show you guys what an actual mission brief look like so I threw together a power point for this mission however it takes a lot of work for those slides so I don't envision doing it again. so I wasn't able to upload the file here but here is a link to it in my gmail folder https://drive.google.com/folderview?id=0B91t4OirdMAmeTFCM3cyemg5S0k&usp=sharing

So something that I'm sure a lot of people don't know is that the U.S. Army actually flies the Mi-17 which from my understanding is just the export version of the Mi-8. And I'll be honest it's weird seeing them fly around down here especially when you are in a mock POW camp. But anyway I found an aircrew training manual that lists all the different tasks a rated aviator should be able to perform so I think it could be useful for those trying to improve on the mi-8. Also i would check out Ch-6 for all pilots regardless of air frame it talks about crew coordination and also has a list of standard words and phrases

Kobuleti was pretty busy tonight. I am very excited to see we have some very knowledgeable members now and I really can't wait to fly the next missions with you guys.  You have now the Trainee status with the rank "Private". This gives you access to the Pilot mess (as you can see) and all the documentation on the site. You can register to missions or schedule your own for the community. I recommend you have a look at some of the documentation regarding this website HERE. If you have any question, feel free to send me a PM. Again, welcome to you both on BSD!

call sign Eagle_Rising age 21 type of internet connection and speed: time warner cable 60Mbps up and 10 down timezone: currently I am Central time zone but will be moving back to Eastern next month availability: during the week I am usually free after 1700L and probably every other weekend  Flight hours: in game I have conservatively have 50 hours of actual flying (not just goofing around)                   In real life though I have about 110 hours in a bell 206, 22 hours in a OH-58A/C and 50 hours in a Uh-60A/L with about 10.5 hours of nvg time in the Black Hawk Knowledge level with dcs editor: I know the basics (just enough to edit pre made missions) My preferred helicopter is of course the Black Hawk!! but until that makes its way into the game I would have to say the Black Shark I still am learning a lot on the ka-50 but I know enough to be combat effective. The Huey is a close second and I am pretty familiar with it considering it is very similar to the Kiowa. I have also been working with the Gazelle but really don't see the point until we get multi-crew support for it. I also have the Mi-8 but am not very proficient with it.   expectations: Really just want to fly with others and have fun while sharing some of what I have learned while becoming a better pilot myself.   A little about myself: well I am currently wrapping up flight school down here at Rucker so that's pretty exciting. If you haven't figured it out yet I'm a Black Hawk pilot so I guess  It's kinda funny that I want to fly the Black Shark in game considering you couldn't get me into an Apache in real life but I digress. Anyway I am really excited to fly with you guys let me know if you guys have any questions.

Hi WindWpn and welcome. Please have a look first at this topic for your application so it makes things easier to get to know you. Although the main idea of BSD is indeed to gather DCS rotorheads for flights, we are looking for pilots not just willing to fly other's missions (aka "consumers") but also willing to create missions for the others (aka "producers"). I hope this philosophy is OK for you. (see "about BSD"). Thanks.

You should have in the editor toolbar a picture icon. Click on it, copy paste the URL of the picture you found in the pop up window and click OK. Like this: There are several other ways. If you have a pinterest (free) account, you can actually pin the pictures you found directly into the BSD board (just ask me to add your name once you have your account). To finish with, you got a way to add files and link them on the BSD FTP. There's a tutorial on how to use the FTP in the Library/Tutorials part of the website. About the Blue Thunder modification, I read somewhere it added some serious forward weight to it and they sometimes had to use a remote control one for some maneuvers.

Well for one after reading the review of the Gazelle ( from the link Bad posted) I never knew that it was Blue Thunder! So now I want one even more, and a JSGME MOD too. I want to fly Blue Thunder! I did a little google search and found pictures of the movie mock up of it. They removed the whole front section and added the Blue Thunder cockpit. I'd post them but I have yet to figure out how add them. The Mi-8, reading the manual on it.. seems it was the "Huey" for the Russians. I did not know that. I do like it, its so ugly its cute. Just a few things I have learned as my conversion from fixed wing to choppers continues. More later. BK

I had a good time.  Also...   When I approached the AO the second time I pointed the Shkval at the DL target and couldn't see it either.  After some moving around I found that there indeed was a very camo'd hill between where me and #2 were at and the target.  After gaining a lot of elevation I could see the smoke.  I think the approach angle was bad for scouting from that location (Where Red 1 and 2 were at) but good for shooting from due to terrain masking.  That said...  it was fine for both with enough elevation but I REALLY prefer to stay within 100' of the ground most of the time.  That likely is due to playing on the 104th and trying to stay in the clutter so I don't get shot by the fast movers :).   In any case...  Thanks for the work :).  I had a good time.

Good deployment around the killzone.   Pilots: BadCrC (Red1), Macer (Red2), Blackwolf (Red3) and M1Combat (Red4). Total duration: 2 hours (remember to update your logbooks guys). Follow up of the first Chammal mission last week. This time we were tasked to take out the ennemy logistic base in the mountains north of Ozurgeti. Weather was just like the first day. Overcast 300m with rain. But full visibility above 800 meters. Group Red took the ATIS and loaded up the ingress route to Alpha on the ABRIS. Datalink test OK. Engines start up and taxiing to Runway 8. Radio communications procedures are good in general. Vertical takeoff together from Rwy08. IMC flight up to 800 meters then VMC on top. Smooth navigation to Holding Area HA1. We went through the mountains above 2000 meters to avoid any small arms fires from enemy groups patrolling the area. We lost BK at that point following a rotor failure. So he has to take another chopper from Kutaisi to rejoin. During this time, first group made of Red 2 and Red 4 joined a south drop point looking for targets while BaDCrC kept moving to Battle Position 2 as defined in the Abris flight plan. I turned out BP2 was a better spot to recon the different targets. But as the recordings showed too, Red 2 and 4 were flying pretty low close to the ground making a visual recon difficult. M1Combat approached a bit too close inside the KillBox and pulled quite a stunt, narrowly avoiding a first engagement from a strela (some damage taken though), dodging the Zu23 on top of the building several times, avoided another SA18 shot from the strela by fooling it with his own flares. The Strela was finaly taken down by BaDCrC as well as a MANPADS on top of the roof of a building. Dodging a first round of bullets from a Zu 23mm.   Then dodging a couple of missiles shot buy the Strela. Impressive! The work between the 4 Ka50 was good. The organisation wing leader/wing man was respected so most of the time, any pilot has a wingmen to fly with, watching for his back. Some difficulties for some pilots to find the datalinks sent to them. Most of the largest threats were processed. But we took some firearms hits from infantry scattered accross the base. Macer dealt with them while BaDCrC was cleaning up the last vehicles of the logistic base. Good work. Primary objective has been completed. RTB with the 3 remaining choppers, then 2 left following another rotor failure (be careful when flying at high altitude as it takes a lot more lift to the blade to maintain the chopper flying high, and if pulling the collective too much, you will most likely brake something).   Overall, an excellent mission for me, although we were not all the time the full 4 Ka50 due to multiple rotor failure (always check you are below the max speed and blade angles below 13 degrees when flying high altitude). Good fluency in using the Datalink. Some difficulties to find the target in the shkval sometimes. We will have to look at the 'slew to target' function of the Ka50 when receiving or using a datalink. That should help you guys to quickly find the assigned target. See you next week for a new mission. Please don't hesitate to add your own debrief and suggestions. BaDCrC

Yep. It's actually simpler than a Cyrillic cockpit. There's a lot of things you can figure out. There are also a lot less switches on the Gazelle than on the Mi-8. On the other hand, the gazelle is a lot harder to fly than the Mi-8 for the moment.

Had quite a fun flight with Blackwolf tonight. Precision landings on moving ships, auto-rotations and other stuff made him sweat a bit but he shows great motivation. A very warm welcome to him and I am looking forward to fly the next mission together!

well, I wanted to have the flight start at Gudauta fully stocked, and have the FARP closer to the action, but require the FARP to be supplied via Sling-Load.  Had it all worked out for the KA-50 sling loads to weigh enough for one full reload, and the MI-8s/UH-1s to be able to carry either 1 load of KA-50 ammo, or 3 loads for themselves.  Wanted to have the FARP as kind of an optional "Bring Your Own Reload".   But it looks like that may not be practical.   Oh well.  It's not required.

Guys, Can we have an idea of how many member actually own, or are planning to own this module? This will be useful to see if it is worth to set up MP missions with it. Also, I saw that Operation Dixmude, the campaign that comes with the module can be partially be flown in coop mode up to 4 players. This could be pretty fun.

Hey Shurugal   I did read youir question in the ED Forums about editing of FARP Warehouses. Now there is no way inside DCS to edit those. It could maybe possible via LUA.script but i have no idea how to use those scripting tools.   Also Gudauta Airbase is pretty close to the FARP in this mission. This one´s Warehouses can be edited.   I have no idea about what you are trying to do or how far you edited this mission but i hope you will find the best solution for this.   I find myself stiil running into Editor traps after years..... so no heads down.   ;)   ISE

    May 2 at 6:03 pm

Our lack of logistics support last time prevented us from finishing the mission. Now killzone Alpha has been processed, we still need to deal with the killbox Bravo. Please read the full briefing here:   Operation Chammal Several terrorist attacks have been reported in the Georgian region of Guria. 5 days ago, a mass shooting in the capital Ozurgeti revealed the existence of an organized terrorist network seeking to spread chaos in the area in order to trigger a religious war across Georgia. Although most of the Ozurgeti attackers have been neutralized, some successfully escaped to hide in remote areas along the border of the autonomous republic of Ajara. These areas have long been known for being a hideout for terrorists of this organization, receiving financial support as well as weapons from the Ajara republic. Two Delta force teams inserted nearby the Ajara border 3 days ago.  Delta Force team 2 discovered an important terrorist training camp in the village Gomismta with a very significant military vehicle storage. Delta Force team 1 discovered a significant terrorist logistic center in the village of Bakhmaro but most importantly, identified the hideout of the main instigator of the Ozurgeti mass shooting in this very same village. It was decided yesterday to launch a massive intervention on those two villages. Recon photographs from one of our HALE drone as well as from our satellite a few hours ago indicated a high level of activity. As a result, two strike forces are being readied as we speak to go and neutralize the threats in the village of Gomismta and Bakhmaro, despite the bad weather on Kutaisi from where we will be operating. In addition, an exfiltration operation will also take place in the meantime to get our two Delta force teams back to Kutaisi.

Isegrim killed two birds with one stone by flying his introduction flight based on a mission he created. He showed an impressive knowledge on the Ka50, tactics and weapons so it is only fair to him to go from Civilian to Junior Lieutenant and become the first official BSD pilot. I hope to see you again soon Isegrim and enjoy your huge collection of MP missions!

for me, multi-monitor touchscreen is not a practical option, I simply don't have space for all that in my barracks room.  A tablet-focused solution like this is much better.

I have heard and looked at this software before and it is very interesting. I am flying with a 5-touchscreens configuration and Helios, so I have plenty of room to display the panels and activate switches and rotaries. But it is surely a very nice addition for every serious DCS pilot.

Hey, just wanted to drop a heads-up that I have begun working on a mission.  Mission will be reminiscent of Dragon's "Rookie Terrorists" mission, but optimized for rotary-wing operations.   Current slots: KA-50 (4) -  SEAD/CAS MI-8 (3) - Transport/COIN UH-1 (3) - Transport/COIN   MI-8 and UH-1 will have the job of ferrying troops to enemy FOBs.  KA-50 will provide SEAD prior to transport arrival, and remain on-station to provide CAS until troops are extracted. Tentative end-state goals: enemy FOB captured and raided for intel enemy POW taken for interrogation enemy vehicles attached to FOB destroyed   This mission will be my first foray into scripted events with DCS, so it may take a minute to complete.  Ideally, I should have it ready by the weekend, but that may prove overly optimistic.

Great presentation Blackwolf and welcome to BSD. It's good you have such an extensive experience in MP and combat sim community. We are trying to fly once a week and heavily relying on the willingness of our community to propose missions to the rest of the group. I guess it should not be too much of a problem for you to fly with us. I hope we will be able to fulfill your expectations. We'll have a quick flight together so we can get to know you and so you get an idea if this group is what you are looking for. Before getting on a flight, make sure your TeamSpeak and headset are correctly configured. I'll PM you once there's an intro mission created for you (I'll try this week) so you can connect on our TS server.  BaDCrC

call sign: BK age: 48 type of internet connection and speed: cable 55 up 10 down timezone: East availability during the week: Nights after 6PM,Weekends mostly free. approximate number of flight hours already spent on DCS: Somewhere over 100( just a guess)More fixed wing than Choppers. knowledge level with the integrated DCS Mission Editor: Basic preferred chopper (you can love them all!) KA-50, Have the Huey but less than 1 hour in it. expectations w.r.t BSD.: Looking for a US based group flying the Choppers and can work with less experienced pilots to help through the learning curve. One that works as a team and above all has fun in this hobby. A little about me: I started with Flanker then Lock on/FC's offline and just toyed with it a little. I moved on to Warbirds 2.7 joined a squad and have been an online player ever since. I moved up to IL2 1946, started a squad and at one time ran 3 servers through HL and had fun doing so. I now fly Cliffs of Dover with my group but after almost 5 years I'm CLOD burnt out. Somewhere in there I rediscovered DCS world and bought a few modules A10c, BS2,FC3,CA and all the ww2 planes...and a bunch more(hope the wife won't see this! :D ) In my down time from Clod I would fly DCS,Su-27's KA-50's and some A10c's as well. I like BS2 the best but never flew on line.I can cold start, take off, fly to WP's, use the weapons, land but didn't think I knew enough to go on line and last that long. Well, as an on line player I'm bored of quick missions and flying by myself.I saw BadCrC post to a tailless KA I sort of landed before I blew up picture so I clicked on the link to see what BSD was and here I am. Thank you for your understanding, I am much more used to flying SP but really look forward to actual missions in the future. By the next flight I will have the TS settings worked out, the rotor noise was drowning out the coms. I will study the datalink settings, I understand the basics but it isn't used a lot SP and finding matches online is hard, that is why I look forward to future flights with you guys. There is a lot of great materiel out there to reference. BaDCrC, I agree completely with setting up a 2nd into flight, I am fairly open especially evenings so whenever works best for you. I will keep an eye on the mission board.

This is interesting, I might look into this myself. It's handy having a physical implementation for the PVI/Datalink sometimes, 2-Way feedback would be fantastic for this (ie: datalink lighting when receiving new information)

Greetings fellow Kamov Pilots! I recently ran across an application for Android and IOS which allows extremely customizable shortcut and macro buttons to be sent from your tablet/phone to your PC.  I have been fiddling around with it since yesterday, working on a KA-50 profile.  The software does not seem to allow for feedback from the game (unfortunately) so switches are not state-aware.  I have been using cut-and-paste graphics from the cockpit textures for buttons, some of them are fairly ugly, but it's still a WIP. functions presently featured include: Datalink PVI-800 R-800 tuner knobs SPU-9 selector switch Weapon control panel Target Mode controls Exterior lights The software is available for free, though if you want to use more than two custom "grids" of buttons at the same time, you have to pa ~$1 per additional grid, up to a maximum of 10 grids (fairly reasonable, especially considering the funcionality)   The control software is available at: http://www.roccat.org/en-US/Products/Gaming-Software/Power-Grid/Download/   KA-50 Profile is available at: http://www.roccat.org/en-US/Products/Gaming-Software/Power-Grid/Store/Grids/Games/Simulation/755/
