Welcome Molevitch.  Since it wasn't a proper mission, there was a bit more messing around last night than the norm but I hope it wasn't too chaotic.  It was good to fly with you.

Welcome Mole,  As Drakoz said we did a little more messing around than usual. I see it as a good way to test what you can and can't do with the choppers. The first time dealing with more people than AI and TS can be hectic. You will get used to it and it will be no big deal. Here is some of what you missed as you and Bad went for a ride in the country. Eagle and Spider testing out the hover: And testing the guns: Eagle testing my windscreen with a 2.75 rocket, as you see my co pilot took it to the face. Folding up my Gazelle like a sandwich..I don't think I walked away from this one.

I've been using UR with the 355th for years now and can attest that it adds to the realism.  We can have one channel for the operation and then have separate channels for each group (fighters, helicopters, CA).  It makes radio communications much more realistic and you can also get a ATC module that works with UR as well (I think it's like 30 dollars).  So if the group ever did get huge, I would invest in that as well. I already have a license so I'm good.  Considering how much money we spend on controllers and cockpits - I don't this cost is a huge issue.

Thanks for your input Drakoz, Yes, I agree with you. Flying 4 or 5 might not be worth UR, although it's not just about being able to use different channels for different groups (you can do this in TS using the built-in family channel feature), it's also about adding realism in using the radios, frequencies and taking into account the terrain. The fact that different choppers use different radio types and bands is interesting as it forces users to do a radio com plan just like IRL. But there's always a way to find a common set of frequencies. Hey, it's a great idea of a feature for UR to take into account this multicrew dimension. I'll suggest this to Tacno (the guy who created UR).

Voted yes as well, I think it would add a lot to the missions. I can see a training day for radio's and set up coming up. Other than the tower freq or the datalink I haven't messed with the radios that much. I'm sure its easy just might need some help getting it set up.

Hi BaDCrC, Drakoz, Spiderpig, Eagle, BlackWolf, and everybody else whose names I might not have got who were flying last night! Thank you for the warm reception, I am honoured to be joining your group as a Trainee Pilot. While I am sure my performance last night was poorer than usual, I was for the first time really dealing with co-operative interactions and TS comms, as well as trying not to get tangled in anyone else's rotors.... My Gazelle felt heavier than usual, I see BaDCrc is quite a tall and big guy, maybe that's why. :) I will continue to brush up on my cold starts and practice landings, taxiing, etc. My biggest lesson last night was compass orientation! I usually don't worry about it too much, just F10 it. But working with, rather than despite, fellow pilots seems to be really important at BlackSharkDen, and I like that. I will have a go at putting together some hopefully decent missions, and see what you think. I have only recently started to look at ME in any depth. When I was working FULL time, (own business, very full time!), I would use DCS as a wind down many evenings, but only running quick missions, or instant actions. Now that can change. For those that expressed an interest, I will post some pics of my cyclic and collective, once I work out how and where to do it on BSD.com. I guess I will need to produce an Avatar as well! See you all soon, Mole

Good news is I will be retiring at the end of this month (Sept), but bad news is I am pretty busy right now. I expect a delay before I can contribute with the squad. I also need to get my Ka-50 cockpit running again and that is taking longer than I thought with all the changes in OS, DCS, ect. I have a lot to relearn and I look forward to flying my Ka-50 again with you.   thanks, see you all soon. -smil-

For groups of 4 to 8 people maybe it doesn't matter, but with complex missions and especially larger groups, something like UR will eventually be a requirement.  If UR is the best you have tried, than paying $8 to get the best is no big deal.  Wasting time with a free solution that doesn't work as well as UR, or is missing important features is not worth it.    Also, if we end up doing multi-crew, it will be important to be able to set up "in aircraft" communications between crew members without going out to the entire group.  Does UR have that ability without having to tune into a single radio channel?  I keep comparing to ACRE for ARMA where people within earshot can always hear easy other.  In the case of Multi-crew, there needs to be a channel for in aircraft comms which is equivalent to the "in earshot" mode.   Anyway, the missions I'm thinking of making eventually will depend on a command structure where commanders of a flight will need to communicate with command or the FARP (where maybe a person will be acting as overall commander, but not necessarily flying).  Flight commanders would get orders from the central command and then on a different frequency give sub-orders to a flight.   This may be difficult or unrealistic in DCS as I'm not sure all helicopters have enough radios or radios with multi-channel capability, but if it is possible, I think it would enhance the chain of command greatly to be able to use UR in this way.

    So Eagle and I have been conducting some quick tests with UniversRadio (aka UR) and it seems to work pretty find. The only drawback of UR compare to the competition (SimpleRadio and Aries Radio) is that you have to pay a licence for about 7 to 8 dollars. The general consensus is that UR is vastly superior to SimpleRadio technically, and vastly superior to Aries from a stability point of view. The good thing I would add is that I can surely got Tacno (the programmer) to help us in case. Overall, Eagle and I felt this could really add the realism and makes the whole mission more enjoyable. {CONTENTPOLL ["id": 3]}

Welcome to comrad Molevitch! This was not the easiest flight for Mole tonight, first having to stay up until 2:00 am, flying MP, having to bare with the pain-in-the-ass french guy in the left seat of his Gazelle, and finally avoid all the crazy BSD pilots flying around him. But I think we all appreciated Mole's motivation to do it right. So it is my pleasure to welcome him in our BSD group. Molevitch is now promoted to Trainee with a Private rank. We hope to see you often flying with us despite the difficult time difference with UK! Cheers! BaDCrC

Molevitch, I look forward to meeting at the flight tomorrow.   Regarding the stick, it might be one of the pots is bad, noisy, or the wire got damaged.  The FFB needs to know the position of the stick to know when it has moved the stick to the desired location (it's a feedback loop).  It is less likely you would have damaged the circuit, but very possible in re-arranging it that you damaged a wire, connector, or pot.  This kind of "easy" problem is often very likely the problem.  So I'd focus on those kinds of things first.  Also, ask yourself what else you may have touched that might have resulted in the problem.   If you don't find anything, then the next thing is to study the circuit board to see if you did anything there (a loose solder blob or piece of wire shorting out something).  Unfortunately, if you don't find any obvious causes like that, then it's time to dive into the circuit itself and see if a component got ruined.  Sadly, it might just be easier to buy another one on eBay.  But if you dive into it that deep, I'll help if I can.   If you haven't seen it already, this page (http://www.simprojects.nl/ms_siderwinder_ff2_hack.htm) has schematics for the driver circuit and maybe some other interesting info that may help you.

Hi Drakoz, It was seeing your posts in DCS Forums that led me to apply to join BSD.  I have not been busy with FFB custom work this past couple of months as my days have been occupied with son's summer holidays and building a koi pond in the garden. That's all done nearly, and as the nights draw in I will return to the anglepoise lit desk and soldering iron. I don't think I will ever get to build my own pcb's, but you never know. I am a fixer and a bodger, and a bit lazy too, though I think my mig 21 stick took 4 x longer than if I had built it from scratch, instead of building the grip around the MSFFB grip.... I will post pix on DCS forum and let you know. Thanks for the offer of help with my dodgy ffb stick. Its a strange problem.... I have used all the existing MS boards and buttons, just repositioned it all. I had some problems at first with the buttons, but they all seem to work now, but the ffb is pulling to a corner, not centring, and the last time I had that problem was when I built the 2 x ffb stick a la PeterP. That was sorted eventually. But I did not expect that on my Mig 21 stick, as I have not tinkered with the ffb, just the buttons... Any ideas on a solution gratefully received! I will be doing my test flight on Sunday night so hope to meet you then.

Mole, welcome!  I was accepted into the group last week and I'm happy to see it is a good group of people.   Regarding time zone differences, I would think the room is open for you to schedule flights at a time on weekends that fit your schedule.  As Bad said, as we grow, people will be looking for different times to fly.  Don't forget, if you are making your own missions for the group, you are the one that schedules the meet up, so you can set the schedule.   Regarding FFB sticks, if you need help figuring out why your 2nd frankenstick isn't working, don't hesitate to contact me.  Or if there is a forum topic where you are discussing it, point me to it. I design electronics and software for a living, and in fact one of my projects is to design my own FFB stick from scratch, so I am very familiar with the circuits for driving a FFB stick.  I was considering doing one of PeterP's sticks using a pair of Microsoft FFB2's, but I concluded I would rather design and fab my own gimbals, circuits, etc. and merge it with a Thrustmaster Cougar/Warthog.  Not a trivial project, but something I will achieve eventually.

How's the weather on that side of the pond? :D I used to fly with a lot of ww2 sim guys from out your way. Are you close to Duxford? I keep getting invited there for the airshow each year and tea and biscuits. Beer and potato chips is fine with me! (that's my Yank showing) I'll get to that airshow one day. I'm very new to the choppers so I'm easy to spot on the field, if its flopping like a fish or a smoking hole..its probably me. Hi Spiderpig, The collective about £40/$60, mostly on the Bodnar board. Did you see pics of it on DCS Forums? The switch box I made out of plasticard, and the lever is a cut-up adjustable crutch I found at the roadside (!), conveniently featuring 2 aluminium tubes nested together. The outer tube is the throttle, concealing a rotating magnet and Hall sensor, while the axis of the lever has a curved magnet mounted and another Hall sensor. Originally I used potentiometers with gearing, but it was fiddly and prone to failure. Leo Bodnar board to run the 2 axes and all the switches. Wiring the switches in a matrix was NO fun at all in such a small space. I would do it differently next time(!). And I do plan on altering this one a bit, as it sits a bit low and the travel of the lever could be improved. I have been dreaming about building a set for the Gazelle of course. I learned a lot from the last two stick builds. The Mig 21bis one still not right.... I tried to use the MS pcb's on that and have had some trouble getting the FFB to work correctly. My Frankencyclic works well, and the collective could be improved. Thinking about modelling and casting the Gazelle pilots' grips If one has a soldering iron, a craft knife and some courage, a hacked up old joystick off ebay will furnish most of the parts, and comes with ready made hardwired pcb's. I just wanted buttons and stuff in different places. A collective is really a joystick with differently placed axes. One goes up and down (collective) and one goes back and forth twisted (throttle) and the rest are buttons, triggers and hats. But you know all that! I used a pair of kitchen cabinet flap-stays a braking system for the collective, which can have their friction adjusted with allen keys. But I wish now I had got some RC car suspension dampers.  I was just looking up how to change a gameport plug for a usb plug. There are plenty of gameport MSFFB sticks on ebay, for not much bucks, if you fancy a custom stick of your own. But you don't want FFB for a collective.  Last night, I hooked up a regular joystick to fly the Gazelle without using simffb to run my usual cyclic. It took some getting used to, but it was quite a thrill ride! It was an old stick and had a slightly loose centre, but there was a sense of security which I had not had before. (My trusty Warthog has a broken-off button and is in the repair shop...) I know some choppers are very sensitive on the cyclic, but with conventional PC hardware joysticks, I think it would be good to have just a little more leeway on the Gazelle... Having said that, I commented before, that learning to fly the Gazelle has hugely improved my handling of all the other DCS helicopters!

That looks awesome actually.  How much did it cost you to build the collective?  I've tried in the past using a throttle from a X52 pro...but found it wasn't sensitive enough.  So been looking for something better to put into my modular pit.

Hi Spiderpig, I use a customised MSFFB2so cannot help with the 940. Sorry! In fat I am running 2 FFB2's built together as one, following the PeterP Frankenstick recipe of a few years ago, with a stick extension of about 30+ cm and a CH Fighterstick grip. All working very well with Ka-50, Mi-8 and Huey. Collective is my own design using Hall sensors and a generic switch box head.  I have a stalled project build of a Mig 21 stick as well, but I don't know what has gone awry with it. The FFB has gone screwy.  Anyway, happy to provide testing on the MSFFB2, if it helps....

We are trying to fly once a week, about 2 to 3 hours sometimes. We are considering two flights a week once we are reaching the critical mass. One 'fun' flight for training, one serious one for a mission. What would help you to fly at more reasonable hours I think is to be able to propose missions in the afternoons, like during weekends. I am sure you will have pilots to join. @Eagle: ah, yes well I never really understood the difference. What I know though is that I have half the days I used to have in France!

Hi Molevitch. Thanks for the impressive presentation. You are definitively the kind of profile we like here at BSD. 5-10 FH per week? Wow. I can't do that. Lucky you! My only worry is your location. So far we are mostly flying during the  week at night. It's always possible to have flights during the weekend in the afternoon or even during weekdays in the afternoon too (for our IRL retired pilots for example), but it did not happened yet (this group is only 6 months old though so this is not final).  The next step now is to find a time slot for you to have a quick fly together. I am a little bit busy this week but next Monday is bank holiday here in the US, so why not?

Thanks Gentlemen!  But don't give up your holidays for me.... I am free to fly most nights, so I am sure there will be an opportunity soon. Give me some time to start to practice my Autorotations.... Time difference, well looking at your Missions Calendar, 1.00am GMT/ZULU starts might be a bit iffy, but its only a few times a month. I don't have to go to work like I used to, so.... as I said, a little pre-flight kip in the afternoon and I''l be up til 3.00. If I prove myself worthy of course! How long do your sessions/missions usually last? And I might have over-stated that 5-10 hours flying per week. Probably closer to the 5. Plus all the fiddling with settings and tweaking the hardware.

Call Sign: Mole Age: 55 Internet Connection and speed: Broadband at 36.8 down and 3.8 up. Timezone: GMT, based in UK.  Language: English, French, (German). Availability: Most nights, subject to family demands and commitments, but 5 hrs ahead of most of you guys. Hours in DCS: Started with the original Lock-On way back when, so must be several hundreds of hours. I currently probably put in about 5 hours flying time per week. Originally very enthusiastic about A-10 and SU-25 on release, but went mad for the Ka-50, many, many hours in that. Currently focussing on the Gazelle, which I can cold start, and getting up to speed on Nav and Radio. I fly all the DCS helicopters, rarely fly the fixed wings these days. Used to be able to cold-start the Shark, but got lazy, and the Mi-8 likewise.... I love the Huey too, so I basically have all the DCS rotaries.I have a nice pit setup, with customised MSFFB stick and custom-built collective. 2 screens attached to a GTX 1070, and a fast PC. My first simulation experiences go back to ZX Spectrum days in the early 80's, but I loved Digital Integration's amazing Hind! when it came out in '97 and of course Microprose's Gunship! I have dipped in and out of DCS Multiplayer over the years, but have been looking for a helo-centric group like yourselves for some time. Mission Editor experience: I have knocked out a few SP missions in ME for my own use, for when I simply want to set up an alternative shooting/nav practice scenario. So I understand the principles, but have not delved into triggers and complex ground and air battlefield set-ups. I am no stranger to complex set-ups of other kinds, and can deal with spread-sheets and other management tools, so I am sure I could get to grips with ME with some guidance. Preferred Chopper: I have enjoyed getting to know all the DCS machines over the years. Sometimes I am amazed at how many years I have been active on them. The Shark remains a strong favourite, simply because of its strength and reliability on the battlefield, and its awesome firepower and stand-off capability. I love the Mi-8 and the Huey too, and look forward to seeing more developments on the cargo and troop movement levels of immersion. I think once we see actual troops in our passenger areas, sitting clutching their equipment, or running off to cover, DCS will be delivering a credible transport scene.Like many, I seem to be putting all my hours in the Gazelle since its release. Still finding it twitchy, and I cannot let go of the cyclic for more than a second as its FFB is not yet implemented. Just starting to experiment with the trim system in more detail too. Also like many, I am looking forward to the day that one of the developers announces the road-map to a release of a Mi-24.... What am I looking for here? I am hoping to get some flying time with some fellow DCS Chopper enthusiasts, many of whom are undoubtedly more experienced and better pilots than I. I want to get some education, and co-operate on organised, structured missions with real world, real person interaction, not simply pitching myself against the AI. I suppose its that thing also of increasing the immersion in a sim, whereby my actions have real effects in a fantasy environment, and create responses from fellow pilots of either appreciation, or dismay. I like to fly fast and low, I like to blow stuff up, I like to rescue lost patrols and pilots, deliver urgent materiel to the frontline and limp back to base for a beer in the mess.  A bit more...: I am now semi-retired, having run my own company for 20+ years. I am a trained garment designer/maker and have worked in the fashion/private commission and film costume world during that time. My time is very much my own now to manage, so long as dinner is on the table for my wife and son when they get in! Nothing to do with the military, apart from making the occasional uniform.... Flight simming for me has always been an extension of my childhood love of model making from Airfix to Tamiya and little lead soldier wargaming.  I hope that the time difference between your HQ and mine does not mean that I can only fly with you when I am considering falling asleep! With planning, the benefit of an afternoon "disco-nap" can probably solve that. I am generally a bit of a night-owl anyway. I have flown a real helicopter, under instruction (!), some 15 years ago, a Robinson, and loved it. The instructor commented that my cyclic handling was impressive for a novice, and I attribute that to long-term simulation use! And it gave me the bug for choppers, though I had to wait for a the amazing DCS products to come along to come anywhere close to the real experience. Conclusion: I hope I have something to bring to the table, and I would be honoured to fly alongside the venerable members of BSD, many of whose posts I have regularly followed on the DCS forums. I look forward to hearing from you, hopefully positively! Yours, Molevitch.

So I know right now we have missions being built, I have had to rework mine and its almost done. I got it down to four from six missions. I, at first made them very short and overly complicated. You could hover at the field and shoot from there! I fixed it and I'll give you the rough breakdown of it: (And I know this sounds like the movie The Rock, but no VX rockets! I was not even thinking of that movie when I made this up, a co worker pointed out it sounded just like it!) A Russian general and a small band of supporters have gone rouge and are trying to take an airfield to gain aircraft and choppers. if they do they will be able to launch strikes against NATO bases in the region and gain nukes to use against all NATO and Russian forces to bring Mother Russia back to its glory days of the cold war. General Ivan Yankinof has had enough of Western interference, influence in Russia and wants to get all Western powers out of Russia.  The Russian government will not comment on the situation but in private has asked the BSD to stop him at all cost. A black op's mission and the Russians claim airspace will be clear for us.  Two A-10's will be on the ready if we need to call them in. Call sign Sandy 1 and 2. Two F-18's from a nearby carrier group will be on station for air support if needed. Call sign Gambler 1 and 2. Mission: Tip of the Spear Time: 1800 Weather: Clear, wind 2ms. Mission objective: Destroy any rouge armor units , AAA and ground units near the base. Stop the General and his forces. This first mission is KA-50's only for the most part. I can add a scout Gazelle or two if needed for anyone who doesn't own the KA-50. The other missions use every airframe the BSD has at its disposal.    So that's what I have coming up. I am super busy this week, going out of town for work and I have two shows to play this weekend at some club that will give us free beer but probably not pay that much!(hence the term starving musician!) so I guess the General will have to wait for a week! It was also nice to see so many pilots available tonight (8!) even though we didn't go through the planned mission. At least it was good fun and experiencing the multicrew was awesome. Thanks again to Eagle_Rising for sharing his IRL knowledge and Spiderpig for sharing his DCS Gazelle one. Welcome again to Dracoz, who apparently have plenty of cool ideas for missions, so that makes him even more welcomed! We need mission builders! You should now have access to the Pilot mess in the forum, as well as the BSD library and be able to create mission events.

BadCrC,  that sounds great. I'm looking forward to it and hopefully getting the chance to fly with more of the group eventually.   Eagle, regarding the Huey and teaching you to fly, ya I was pretty happy at how well it prepared me. But what surprised me even more was what I learned in DCS Huey because of flying the R44.  It was a 12 kt wind when I flew the R44.  The instructor told me to do a left turn 90 degrees.  A little shaky, but not too difficult.  Then back to center.  Then I did a right turn with the wind hitting the left side of the helicopter.  OMG it was really difficult to control!  I hadn't tried DCS Huey in the wind.  I went home and added wind to my training scenario and was surprised to see the Huey responded almost exactly like the R44.  It was really an eye opener. BK, thanks for the Welcome.   Regards,Michael

Hello, I'm sure my status as most detailed intro will be usurped by the next guy.  :-) The difference in time zone is fine.  I'm used to it when meeting up with online gamers.    Re: flying only choppers.  Understood.  I enjoy the other stuff as well, but I'm not expecting any of that from Black Shark Den.  In my sim world and my RC world, I own fixed wing stuff 3 to 1 over helicopters (I have a lot more fixed wing DCS modules, and I have a lot more RC airplanes than RC helicopters), but I fly 80-90% helicopters in both cases.  I guess all you need is just one good helicopter.  But in DCS, we have 4.  Re: Mission editor - I so seldom fly the campaigns and MP missions that I was thinking I wouldn't want to make missions (at least not right away).  But thinking about it, I realize I'll enjoy making missions as much as playing them.  I already have several ideas, both simple and complex.  Some might consider this requirement of your group to be a bit harsh by disqualifying some members unnecessarily.  But I think it makes the important point that to really enjoy DCS, people need to not be afraid of the mission editor.  It is a critical part of the sim.  And stuff like SAR, or maybe even a mission that creates tension while performing a task, but without ever encountering real combat - these are realistic scenarios and if done properly are just as much fun as blowing stuff up.  Wow, 90% ex military (and some still military - Eagle_Rising).  I hope and assume that will bring an environment of professionalism which is what I'm looking for.  It's not a matter of playing solider.  It's a matter of working to complete a task efficiently and competently under adverse circumstances (i.e working with people effectively and through the command structure).  And in sim, I assume there to be realistic structure and operations of course.  It was the ARMA world where people expected me to salute them based on club ranking while in the training areas that got a little ridiculous. Re: the ranking system and my comments.  No problem there.  I expect a ranking system based on contributions to the club to recognize people.  And, I'm glad to hear in game (sim), there are opportunities for people to step up regardless of rank status.  That's all I can ask for.   Re: the next step.  I'm easy.  Suggest a time that works for you and I'll see if I can meet it.  This week:   Thursday evening is likely good (but you have a scheduled thing).  Friday evening is probably not unless it is late (after 11pm EST).  I'll probably be flying Friday night, but I can't guarantee when I'll be home.  Any time over the weekend is good.  Next week is open right now.   Regards, Michael

Welcome Drakoz! I will echo what Bad and Eagle have said. As a convert from fixed wing, most sims ( ROF,IL2 1946, Cliffs Of Dover and DCS ..Flanker driver) I'm still learning the weapons for most of the choppers. More of a lets learn to fly it first kind of thing. So maybe we can learn the Gazelle weapons, and others together. Look forward to flying with you sir. BK

Hey glad to see a new face I think you will enjoy the atmosphere here we have a lot of good pilots. as far as your concerns about being to militaristic we do try to keep it pretty realistic in terms of radio, formations, and tactics. You will be provided with everything you need to get up to speed after your intro flight. However if you screw something up no one will jump down your throat. Trust me we are in no way like any of the arma groups I get where you are coming from on that. But do realize that we are striving towards a more authentic combat experience.  also I think you would be surprised at just how close the sim is to real life. I have a fair amount of time in a bell 206/ OH-58A/C which for all intents and purposes is pretty much just a scaled down Huey. I actually was able to hover my first time thanks to DCS Huey and I would pretty much practice in DCS every night until I fixed whatever I screwed up on the previous day. Honestly I think DCS has a better flight model than our multi million dollar motion sim.      I'm really looking forward to flying with you Drakoz, it will be fun. Eagle

Hello Drakoz, You already won the prize of the most complete and detailed introduction ever on BSD. Congratulations. It's a real pleasure to read. Glad to get people from the west coast. I hope the time difference will be OK for you as we mostly fly during the week in the evening around 2000 or 2100 EST. That's gonna be more like dinner time for you. But we also have flights during the weekends for pilots who can fly in the afternoon.  Let me answer/comment some of your expectations/concerns: Availability: it looks like you'll be OK even with the small time difference. There is no obligation to fly regularly with us. We just want to have pilots enjoying what they do, not forced to do it.  Experience with DCS: sounds/looks good. As you understood, we will be flying ONLY choppers. The only time you'll see a fixed wing will be either a multi squadron mission, or an AI one. That's the only constraint. We are not looking for expert pilots only. We need them though to know how to cold start their aircraft, use some of the systems like datalink, fire weapons and handle correctly the aircraft. Flying MP is more a chance to learn some combat procedures, radio comms, team work. Mission Editor: This is a real concern generally speaking at BSD lately as we are badly lacking mission creators. It means that things are getting quiet whenever I am traveling (and it happens often). I keep saying that a MP missions doesn't need to be stuffed with complicated triggers and scripts. Find a story. Drop targets where you want. And let's take off and kick ass! That's all what is required for a good mission. Preferred chopper: well, the Gazelle is very popular here lately for the reasons you mentioned. And it's getting even worse with all the updates and new weapons she is receiving. We are generally trying to have different chopper types in a mission, but to be realistic and have a good mission, the Gazelle today is only compatible, cruise speed wise, with the UH-1H. Mi-8 and Ka-50 are, on the other side, a perfect match. It happens in some missions that there is nothing to blow up, like SAR missions for example. So I am glad you said that. Expectations: I feel like you would be a good instructor. That's great. I would say 90% of our members are serving or ex military. I am not by the way. But I never felt anyone being bossy about it. It's more about exchanging good stories and sharing IRL experience. The idea is to fly in a realistic environment while keeping in mind DCS is a game and should stay enjoyable. On the other hand, pilots should follow minimal procedures to make sure it is not killing the enjoyment of the others (like flying on their own, shooting at everything they see, not talking on the radio, shooting at friendlies for the fun of it, ...). We also like pilots who take time to read mission briefings before showing up, and be on time. It is pretty bad to have to restart a mission when someone is showing up 30 minutes or 1 hour late and didn't tell anyone. There is a ranking system at BSD and it is based mostly on how involved in BSD the pilot is. Pilots who fly a lot, create missions, teach other pilots what they know, take part in the website life deserve to be  recognized as such. During missions, finding a volunteer to lead a squad or even a small group of helicopters is always a challenge. So anyone willing to lead is welcome, no matter the rank because it is hard enough to find a volunteer. Perspective about sims: all real chopper pilots flying here will agree with you. Although a video game, DCS does help in real life.   OK, so let's talk about the next step. Are you available this week/ this weekend for an introductory flight? Evenings?

Call Sign:  Drakoz Age:  49 Type of Internet Connection:  25/6Mbps Comcast Cable Timezone:  West Coast USA (UTC−8) Availability during the week:  My schedule is flexible.  I can often fly week days/nights as well as weekends.  I'm an independent contractor, so sometimes I have a lot of time and other times I am very busy.  Approx Flight Hours in DCS:  Approx. 300 hours in DCS (all modules), 70% in helicopters.  I'm also an RC helicopter pilot (3 years), and have a couple hours flying real helicopters.  I've been flying sims since Microsoft flight sim in the '80's, but it wasn't until IL2 Stumovik that I really got into it.  But most my flying has been in the last few years due to the release of DCS Huey. Here is a video of me flying from back when the Gazelle first came out.  Maybe a little boring, but interesting to me to see how much I've improved and how the updated flight model is much better.  This video was intended to show back then that the Gazelle was flyable, but it took a very active stick to do it.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ca0RUIXoDkg Knowledge level with DCS Mission Editor:  Limited.  I've set up a few basic scenarios, but not complete missions with complex triggers or programming.  Learning to use the tools, or even do programming is not a concern.  I came here looking for a group to fly with, but custom missions are what keep things dynamic and interesting.  It is likely, with the assistance of other mission builders, I will become an excellent mission builder and look forward to it as much as I look forward to flying. Preferred chopper:  All of them, but the Gazelle most lately because it's new.  I am looking forward to multi-crew in the Gazelle most (and other helicopters if it becomes common).  Most my hours are in the Huey, though.  My least time is in the Mi-8.  I want to fly missions in all of them, and all types of missions (combat and otherwise).  I enjoy flying as much (or more) than I enjoy blowing stuff up.   So I tend to focus a lot on the details of how each machine operates but I am often weak on the weapons systems.  I'm looking forward to joining a group as combat missions will be more fun with real people working in teams.    My expectations:  To have fun, learn, teach, and create stuff (missions and otherwise) related to helicopters in DCS.  By fun, I mean generally realistic fun which I think matches your group's charter (not general dumb screwing around fun).  But I hope not in an environment that is too militaristic or regimented.  Such environments, I find, tend to ruin a community as regimentation outside of the sim (like on the forums or chat rooms), seems to miss the point that we are doing this for fun and social reasons, not because we are in the military.  I saw too much of that with some ARMA groups I joined.  I would hope to see someone act as a low ranking grunt (pilot) one day, and the mission commander another day - so we all get the chance to fly all positions (when we are ready), but not because of some rank system based on seniority and experience in the club.  That's often a club killer.   Some other background info: I raced motorcycles for 15 years but aviation is what I really enjoy.  Motorcycles are cheaper.  Ha!  Flight sims and RC are even cheaper than motorcycles, but I hope to get a helicopter pilot's license (soon) and own a helicopter some day.  I am also a motorcycle riding and race instructor at the track (to street riders and racers alike). I teach because the best way to learn is to teach.  Interestingly, the best teacher isn't always an expert.  The best teacher is the one that is available and willing to observe and compare notes.  People learn different things from each other due to different perspectives.  Hence the other reason for joining a group and flying with them regularly.  I hope to join a group where part of the fun is helping each other learn.   My perspective about Sims:   I'm also a big proponent of using sims to learn.  No, a sim isn't like the real thing, but it does teach you enough that when you do the real thing, the number of new things you have to deal with is significantly reduced, allowing you to focus on fewer skills and hence learn better.  It is impossible to learn it all at once.  That's why riding a motorcycle, or flying a helicopter is difficult to learn.  DCS Huey taught me enough to hover a Robinson R44 for 5 minutes on my own the first time I ever flew in a real helicopter, and RC helicopter sims have saved me thousands of dollars in crash damage flying my RC helicopters.  Sadly, there are no motorcycle simulators out there (just motorcycle games).  Building an proper motorcycle simulator (just the hardware) would cost as much or more than buying a bike.  We won't talk about how many times I've crashed a bike.  :-)  Thankfully, they were all at the track without guard rails, trees, oncoming cars, cops, and cliffs.   Regards,Michael

I think that facbook, pintrest and youtube will cover everything really idk I've never used anything else. as for changing the facbook to a profile I don't think it's a great idea because to see a profile you have to be added as a friend also on a profile once we get a recruiting video I can boost the video so it reaches more people sort of like advertising. I will also look into adding pintrest to the page and I will let you know if I find anything out.

    August 16 at 7:02 pm

Eagle, Just created this topic to follow up on the social media introduction of BSD. I added a module for all visitors and members to easily connect to BSD social elements of the website. For Pinterest, I had to create from scratch a new pinterest account for BSD and not a just board associated to mine. You'll need to be added on this new account to add your own pins. Also, I realiszed Pinterest can be linked to a FB account. This might be good to close the loop. Facebook: I am still struggling to understand how this thing works. Mostly the difference between a profile and a page. I wanted to link the social media module to the BSD FB page, but it can actually only works to an individual profile. I am wondering if we should just start a new BSD FB profile instead of the page you created. I generated a new email adress that I can share with you so we can all log on the same profile. Well, if this can be done of course. Do you think there are other social tools we should be on?

Using free fraps while I fix my paid fraps the video and music skips. Just me flying to a hot zone and dodging a few missiles along the way. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ILOSHFCumss&feature=youtu.be Maybe we all could add a few things into a movie mission then fly and film it. Like I said just a thought.

There is definitively a lot of stuff we can do and as you can see, Eagle already started a nice project with the BSD facebook page. Making promotional movie is another option too but we need more rushes of the missions and trainings we are doing, preferably with 4 or 5 pilots. Rushes are the hardest part of creating a good movie. One option also is to create a dedicated movie making mission aimed at getting some cool videos too.

Wow, nice set up! I thought about using my old X-52 throttle zipped tied( or bolted) to the side of the arm of my chair as a collective but never thought of adding a handle to it. I have a few pot spikes with my CH gear and yeah its good but I am thinking hard about pulling the trigger and getting the Warthog. I'll keep my Saitek combat pedals because I do like them. If you fly barefoot with your tippy toes they are the best. :)

So I finally finished my project. I took an old bar stool and cut it down to the height I wanted and I put a shelf underneath it for my collective I then sanded it down and stained it and bolted my controls down. Overall I really like it the collective has the same motion as real life which is pretty cool and everything is pretty much at the right height. I wish I had a collective head but the throttles give me plenty of buttons for that. I also thought I would throw in pictures of the rest of my setup while I was at it.

I had a thought after watching A bridge too far. We should do a recruiting type video using the Blackshark, highlighting formation flight, and the different weapons in combat and so on. We have a lot of interested pilots on the ED forums and I see when someone new posts about the KA-50 people point them to us. I spoke with a few and Shu did too, but some are based in Europe so the mission times won't work for them.  One suggested a Euro chapter of the BSD after I asked if weekend times would work better. So I said I'd pass it on up the chain.  A lot of the squads I flew with in CLOD were across the pond so weekend afternoons about 1330 or 1400 worked for them. Well just a thought I had. BK

So an update on the Gazelle. After a few hours working with Eagle and practicing with the tips and suggestions from him I can hover the thing! It still wanders around a little and if I don't keep my tongue hanging out the side of my mouth it will get away from me. Baby steps with this one. I've spent the last few hours taking it in and out of ETL, hover, move and do it again. I find I'm dancing on the pedals a lot. I don't know if that's because I have it set at 100% no curve or if that is just normal for this chopper. Thanks to Eagle for working with me on this! I'll keep at it and get it smoothed out one day. Oh ya we might want to add cherry and ice it could come in handy for tomorrows mission if it gets off the ground. Ice means that the LZ is clear of enemy  Cherry means the LZ is compromised  Usually the air mission commander will ask for a cherry-ice call 15-30k out and either a forward ground unit or attack/recon assets will give you the appropriate response

I think it's an awesome update coming up.  Finally I can have someone focus on piloting so I can look for targets and blow them up.  On the multi crew version there is no auto collective like in the real world...so more work for the pilot.   Only sucky part is that the next couple fridays are busy for me (I'm in a play).  So when they do release it, I won't be able to be on that night flying.  But my weekends should free up after Sept again.

ya I like it I think this is going to help out new members a lot.  As for adding visual, it's stated next to contact and honestly I wouldn't worry about getting everything down you did a good job by covering the obscure ones.  Another thing though idk if you would want to put it in the list or not but all the different formations I.E. staggered, trail, echelon, combat cruise etc. Actually thinking about that I will probably do a fundamentals of flight on that but it's just a thought.

    August 9 at 9:55 pm

Thanks Eagle. I'll move the table along with its search function in a final page on the frontend site. I think we are covering all the existing and future capabilities of the DCS chopper modules with this list, including a/a of the gazelle (fox two) or the laser designation of the BO105 (sparkle). So it should be stable enough. It is not as short as I thought but there are a lot of terms we are already using or are obvious. Should I add 'VISUAL' too?

  • Eagle_Rising replied to the topic BSD Brevity.

    August 9 at 7:50 pm

Good stuff I really like the search function    as for Contact it really depends on the context, for example ATC can tell you to contact approach control on 121.4 or some one in your flight could say they have visual contact on a WP or another object on the infantry side if they say they have troops in contact then that means they are in a fire fight. I guess the reason why this confused me is usually we just omit contact for brevity sake so if my copilot says wires 12 o'clock people usually just respond with visual on the wires it's kind of funny how that works.

Great. Thanks. I edited the first post according to your remarks. I added your proposed document to the BSD library for the time being and I am cross checking it with this existing list. I can see some terms that could be useful or whose definition differs from the list. What do you think? - ANCHOR (location): Orbit about a specific point - BRACKET (direction): Maneuver to a position on opposite sides, either laterally or vertically from the target. - BUMP: A climb to acquire LOS to the target or laser designation - CONNING: Unknown/nonfriendly aircraft producing contrails. - CONTACT: Acknowledges sighting of a specified reference point (either visually or via sensor). <- Different from what we thought - COVER: Assign S/A weapons or establish an A/A posture that will allow engagement of a specified track or threat if required. - DATA (object, position): Standby for data link message concerning object at stated location. - DECLARE: Inquiry as to the identification of a specified track(s), target(s), or correlated GROUP. Responses include FRIENDLY, BOGEY, BANDIT, HOSTILE, NEUTRAL, UNABLE, or CLEAN. Full positional data must accompany declaration responses. - EYELID: Possible IED detected via airborne/ground sensor. ya sorry I haven't gotten around to this, I did see a few things  Remington is the proper term for having only guns left this should replace Dakota Pigeons would only be to homeplate all other points you can you vector I.E request vectors to waypoint 3 replace string with wires ziplip should be replaced with minimize   overall it looks pretty good and I will be uploading the most up to date multi-serves brevity codes I could find so I hope that helps.     “In every battle there comes a time when both sides consider themselves beaten; then he who continues the attack wins.”– General Ulysses S. Even for low quality that was very cool to watch! I don't have pictures for this just a funny now story. As an Air Force brat I had to keep by DOD ID card current to go on base. This is 1989 so security wasn't like it is today. I had to go to the Air National guard base in Sanston VA to get my new card. The office was upstairs above a hanger. I walk in and a F-16 was in there with a ladder up to the cockpit and it was open! No one was around so I figure I'll go take a peak. I got up to the cockpit had one leg inside and was about to sit down when I hear "Get down from the aircraft sir"!. I turn around to see a SP with his firearm. Apparently he did not think I should have a look around. Why he didn't march me right to the CO, I don't know. I told him I was just curious and wasn't going to touch anything. So I got my ID and went on my way. I never got that close to a real shark again!   I got another one about getting caught throwing a cigarette butt on the ground and spending the rest of the day walking around the whole base picking up any little trash or butts I saw. That will teach you to knock the flame off and put it in your pocket! :)

Overall I think the mission was a success even though we were not able to complete the main objective because of the glitch in the script we still were able to accomplish many of the secondary objectives. This mission was a lot of fun and really challenged me to be adaptive as a pilot. As for adding Gazelles to the mission, I don't know how well it would work the Mi-8s and ka-50s are a lot faster and it would be easier for them to outrun them by mistake. It could work if the Gazelles were their own recon element that took off before us and operated independently. It would be a great Idea but we are stretched thin on how many pilots we can put up at one time (I figured that out with my overly ambitious mission that never got off the ground) but hopefully we will be able to do these types of missions with multiple formation operating separately. Anyways I would like to give some sustains and some improves on the mission execution to help us improve for next time. sustains communications people were using communications to help improve everyone's situational awareness (remember not everyone has the same picture of the battlefield especially for me as flight lead it sometimes can be hard enough to just navigate by yourself let alone scan the area properly) also good use of brevity terms.    formation we all arrived at the farp together (for the most part) the conditions were not ideal. I couldn't see the formation but considering we only had one mid air collision I'll call that being a success. weapons delivery  when we received contact everyone responded with the appropriate measures, no one got too target fixated and ended up getting to target fixated and getting shot down. we did receive damage but that is to be expected when dealing with AAA close in. Improves pre mission planning situational awareness is everything in the battlefield and everyone should be reading over the mission briefing before hand and writing down important information I.E. frequencies, waypoints, weather. writing things down is the only way I can remember things and I had to refer to my kneeboard many times last night. also a suggestion if you do free flight during the week just to mess around do it in the upcoming mission area you'll be surprised how much being familiar with the area helps in SA. aircraft proficiency no one here is perfect and knows everything about the aircraft but we did have some start up issues and I had my own issues with having to learn how to use the ADF on the fly. If everyone has a basic understanding of the systems they will be using in that mission it will make things go a lot smoother.    Last night went very well considering that a lot of us haven't flown with each other much. I definitely want to see us grow and improve as a team and I am looking forward to seeing the future of BSD. "The soldier is the Army. No Army is better than its soldiers." - George S. Patton

The bombs are on a 11 second delay so I don't blow my tail off. So they hit the ground right after I dropped and armed and blew up 11 seconds later. You can put it on a hour delay. Up to 24 hours and drop them all over the field for a surprise later on! I don't think I have seen the two you posted only the one with your insane ka-50 cockpit! I'll go watch them.

I think adding some Gazelle L and M would be good in there.  The M model could hide in the mountains and scope out the target area, while L version could get in closer and take out smaller targets. Overall, I think you guys figured out that I"m not that handy in a Black Shark.  But I did do better in it then I expected, so thats a plus.  I think learning it's weapon systems would be nice at some point.

Sorry, I didn't take any screenshots to illustrate, but if you have some, don't hesitate to post them. Just a few words to debrief even though the mission didn't completely worked as planned. Pilots: BaDCrC Eagle_Rising Blackwolf The crawling Chaos SpiderPig Mission time: 3 hours Briefing: Glad to see most of the pilots went through it (but not everyone!). I complex missions like these, it is critical to read and understand the briefing before jumping in. We are usually doing a quick review of it before take off, but it is mainly to see if there is any questions left about the mission. It also helps a lot during the mission to understand what and where you should go for a given task. And there were a lot of tasks: Escort Convoy Alpha, Search for convoy Bravo and escort to FARP at W3, SAR mission on the Mi26, Search and Destroy enemy forces in the hidden village, Deploy troops in the hidden village.  Startup: Please try to be on time for missions. A lot of triggers depend on the time the mission starts and it often requires a complete restart if people join late, which is not great, immersion wise, for the pilots who were on time. If you think you'll be late, just say it on the shoutbox and we'll delay the mission start and wait for you. Also, if you know you'll come, remember to register to the mission. Finally remember mission time is setup in Zulu time. So a mission set at Day D 0100Z actually starts at Day D-1 0900EST.  Radio comms: A lot of progress was made and we are starting to hear the proper use of the brevity terms. We will probably need to spend some time on the startup/taxiing/take off radio procedures though. We are reaching a stage regarding the number of pilots flying where it might be useful at some point to use different TS channels for each group. But still it was workable with 5 pilots. Tasks: The fact that convoys were not properly synced with the clients screwed up badly this mission overall, but some secondary tasks luckily didn't depend on convoys position. The Mi-26 SAR went well. Eagle was able to find the position of the downed Mi-26 based on its ELT transmission, land near the survivors and embark them back to FARP at W3. Cover was provided by orbiting Ka-50 which I believe is the correct procedure for this kind of operations. If you guys got any questions by the way on the radionav system of the Mi-8, don't hesitate to ask beforehand. The second task that we were able to complete was the hidden village search and destroy. We had to sustain a lot of damage though as we misjudged the safety distances to maintain and several Ka-50 were damaged before we could properly deploy and get in Scan positions. All the threats were neutralized though. It was nice to see that Ka-50 pilots are familiar with the use of the datalink. The third task consisted in picking up troops at FARP W3 and deploy them in the village to capture it. Angel 1 sustained some heavy damage and had to make an emergency landing nearby the village (insufficient cover and clean up from the Ka50) but was able to unload the troops who were able to take down some of the enemy fighters inside the village.  The fourth task we were able to complete was to search and provide CAS on the second lost convoy Bravo. Eagle has an impressive reflex of releasing a bunch of rockets on the village nearby the stranded convoy which was firing at them and killed all the enemy fighters in only one pass. We had limited success in 'simulating' the Bravo convoy escort due to the sync bug and took heavy damage at the first ambush. So we decided to RTB as it was already late.  Thank you all for taking part in this mission. It was really fun for me although a bit frustrating for the convoys movement, but once this problem is solved, i will setup this mission again, maybe with different choppers like the Gazelle SA342L Model that would have done great too, or a mix of Ka50 and Gazelle for those who don't have the Gazelle (yet!).

This is Cliffs Of Dover but I thought I'd share it with ya'll.  Disclaimer: My TrackIR is not that jumpy,Fraps just rendered it that way, Also when I look straight up..I'm drinking beer :P). Backstory, In Clod each squad gets a home base. One day I logged on to see a lone 110 bombing and gunning ours. He didn't do much damage and I chased him off in a Hurricane fighter. I found out who it was in game chat with him, A rival German squad! So I got the boys together and went to bomb their base. So it looks like a empty airfield but when you bomb it the craters stay for 24 hours. So by us hitting the field we stopped them from flying for a day. Its a dirty trick to do but..he started it! LOL  I cant figure out how to add youtube so here is the link for it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LPO5f1KEok0 After I posted this ,Waif..the other guy had made a video of his mission and posted it as well. So we told a story when you add the two together. I'll see if I can find his. I don't have the best video editing software but I'd love to do a movie sometime about the BSD. BK

OK, now we are starting to have a small core of pilots, and since it is becoming part of the discussions and whishes from BSD members, let's start to work on the radio coms. First thing is the brevity we want to use. There are tons of brevity terms and a lot of guides and documents from RL or from other squads that we could use but we must keep in mind that: the BSD brevity list needs to be short enough for everyone to remember and use during missions the terms shall be relevant to rotarywings operations and available weapons/systems I would like to propose a first list of terms that should meet those two constraints but it is opened for discussion (add/remove). Hi Spiderpig (or Poly Roie). Very happy and honored to see you here! And thanks for taking time to post your introduction. No doubt we are all looking to fly with you and also try your missions! We have a mission coming tomorrow evening 5th at 2100 EST (missions on calendar are in zulu time). You are most welcome to join (although it is a Ka50/Mi8 one). Otherwise I am working on the next Harmattan mission for our Gazelle campaign, but it might not be ready for next week. Beside those missions, we usually have informal flights and introduction flights to get to know each other as this group is still young. Let us know if you want to schedule one of your missions by the way. We are all looking here to fly as close as possible to the existing procedures (while still having fun), and we are fortunate to have members willing to spend some time to explain IRL ones. So once we have a good core of regular pilots, we will be able to work those procedures in a more detailed way and take part in multi squad events. PM me for tomorrow if you want to join. Otherwise, I'll set up some intro flight next week.   BaDCrC

Callsign:  Spiderpig Age: 41 Internet Connection: Verizon Fios 75mbps up and down Timezone: EST  Availability during week:  Weekdays at night and weekends.  I prefer to schedule flight time with other ahead of time so I can put it on the family calendar (got a wife and two kids who require my presence at times) Flight hours in DCS: A plethora.  Been flying the A-10C since 2011.  In Fixed wings I would say 1000+, in Heli's I started with the Huey and would say about 200+.  I work for Polychop Simulations so I tend to do a lot of test flights during the week.  I probably have the most amount of hours in the Gazelle with the Oculus Rift CV1 Mission Editor Knowledge: Pretty darn good.  I created training maps for several squads I've flown in.  I also worked on some respawn scripts before starting to work with Polychop.  I also create the test missions for Polychop as well. Preferred Chopper:  Gazelle and Huey (since I can start both of them).  I own the Ka-50 and Mi-8 as well, but don't fly them that often. My expectations:  So I've been flying sims about 30 years now.  But only in the recent 3 have I actually learned how to fly a helicopter.  Most squads I've been in have helicopters, but are mostly fixed wing based.  Working for Polychop, I obvisouly fly the Gazelle a lot - but I find that I don't have the basics of helicopter procedures.  I know how planes make radio calls, taxi, and takeoff.  But I would like to work the more procedural things of helicopters. I would also like to get better at flying with others in formation and how to employ a helicopter more effectively.  Since Polychop is going to be developing another helicopter (BO-105) I figured it would be a good time to learn my helicopter methodology.

Alright part 2 I promised I will talk about Effective Translational Lift (ETL) and settling with power (VRS).  So first what is translational lift?  Well the textbook answer is the efficiency of the hovering rotor system is improved with each knot of incoming wind gained by horizontal movement or surface wind.  So what does that mean. Remember that diagram I posted earlier of the hovering helicopter you had wing tip vorticies, those vorticies cause drag and reduce performance.   So as you can see the helicopter is moving into more clean air and it's leaving the vorticies behind the rotor system is becoming more efficient as well as the tail rotor because it is working in less turbulent air.  You can see it even more so at 10-15 knots So one of the first things you'll notice is that your nose will yaw left (right on European helicopters) because the tail rotor is more efficient Moving on to transverse flow effect  Again the textbook answer is the difference in lift between the fore and aft portions of the rotor disk caused by the rear portion of the rotor disk having a grater downwash angle than the front portion  The differences in lift causes a vibration that is very noticeable in real life and pretty noticeable in game. It will occur during takeoffs and landings at a range of 10- 20 knots (which is a good indicator of speed because your air speed indicator is unreliable under 40 knots) You will also notice a right rolling motion( left in European helicopters) this is because of something called gyroscopic precession which is a topic for another day but long story short is that any force applied on a rotating object will manifest its self 90 degrees later.  So in the case of trans verse flow effect we have less lift in the aft section so 90 later it will roll instead of pitching up And finally ETL which occurs 16 - 24 knots when the rotor system completely outruns the recirculation of old vortexes and begins to work in relatively undisturbed air. airflow becomes more horizontal therefore induced flow and induced drag are reduced. this efficiency continues until the best climb airspeed is reached. ETL also has it's own affect on the helicopter because of dissymmetry of lift (the difference in lift between advancing and retreating blades) and gyroscopic precession the helicopter will pitch up slightly. Lets break it down from 0-24 knots  nose will yaw left (right in euro) aircraft will roll right (left in euro) nose will pitch up(same in euro) This will also happen on landing so the reverse applies  Effective translational lift is especially useful when you are in a hot climate, high altitude, or have a high gross weight where power is limited.    A good practice technique to simulate these conditions is pick up your helicopter to about a 5-10 ft hover look at your torque gauge (or a blade pitch indicator if you are a weird Russian) and don't go past that just nudge the cyclic forward you will slowly begin to increase speed and will eventually start to climb. The same can be done while rolling in the Ka-50 or the Mi-8     and bk this part is for you :)  Settling with Power also refereed to as vortex ring state(VRS)  is when the helicopter settles in its own downwash.  Settling With Power Helicopter Online Ground School also a good reminder to always takeoff and land into the wind  Old army flight school video on settling with power  The following conditions must exist simultaneously for settling with power to occur a vertical or near-vertical descent of at least 300 FPM  slow forward airspeed (less than ETL) power applied 20-100 percent of the available engine power with insufficent power remaining to arrest the descent (low rotor rpm can make it worse) (this is also why you can't get into settling with power in an autorotation) Recovery from settling with power may be affected by one or a combination of the following during the initial stage ( when large amount of excess power is available) a large application of collective pitch may arrest rapid descents but if done carelessly or too late could aggravate the situation and result in increase rate of decent  achieve directional flight. gaining airspeed in any direction will allow you to arrest the upward flow of air this is the preferred method  So I hope that helps in dcs if I am going to be doing a terrain flight decel I make sure to watch the VSI and make sure I apply collective appropriately to avoid greater than a 300fpm rate of descent and for landings I always make sure that i stay above ETL (you can use the shaking from transverse flow to help) until I am within ground affect  remember smooth collective inputs my IP always accused me of trying to pump a well.   Again let me know how I did and if you have any questions let me know also let me know what you guys want me to cover next it doesn't necessarily have to be aerodynamics I can discus anything from the FAR AIM to basic combat tactics.

Thanks I'll have something ready before Friday and I will make sure to hit on ETL and VRS pretty hard thankfully those are a lot easier for me to explain than airflow at a hover. as for fixed wing to rotor transition don't worry it's hard the other way too I just picked up the M-2000c and I think on like my hundredth try I finally landed it.

Wow good stuff! This is helping me a lot! If anything just going through the books and reading the post has helped me with control, and going in and out of ETL. That's where I normally VRS and crash. I find I use way too much collective as well and that just makes my landing crash even quicker. So no more yanking up and down on the collective..(ok that sounds bad). Fixed wing ..just go to the notch and put the pointy end to the sky..rotors eh a little harder. Thanks Eagle, I'll be paying very close attention to the ETL part of class! BK

I will have to check that out. I am really trying to get better at explaining this stuff. I was going to try explaining resultant relative wind and AOA but to be honest it was giving me a headache trying to put it in my own words and plus that could be it's own lesson. Really I think all of this is something that just clicks eventually, for me it was half way through flight school.

Thanks Eagle! Very good video to explain IGE/OGE. I am reading this right now: It's better explained than the free FAA manual, but I have to say it is still giving me headaches sometimes.

https://www.facebook.com/thehelicopterpage/videos/1135665766456399/ So I'm going to go ahead and play armchair quarterback and give an explanation of why this person crashed (note I haven't seen any investigation report yet but I am it gives me a good talking point) I know we have a couple R22 pilots in the group so they can correct me if I made a wrong assumption. The amazing thing about helicopters is that we can hover there is an aerodynamic effect I'm sure most of you have heard called IGE or In ground effect  So a little explanation to make this as clear as mud. the turning blades act like a big fan pulling air down which is called induced flow. I would like to try to explain all of all this in the diagram but I am afraid I will do a better job of confusing everyone so I implore you to read relative wind 1-21 to angle of attack 1-27 it should help a lot. but the long story short is the more induce flow you have the more collective you will need to pull. A good video of Induced Flow I'm sure most have heard of OGE or out of ground effect as well it occurs 1 to 1 and a half of the rotor diameter (depending on which source you read). as you can see in the diagram you have a larger induced flow and larger rotor tip vortexes this is caused by the lack of a solid surface below you to slow that induced flow. so you will have to pull more collective at out of ground effect than in ground effect. now here is something really cool say that you are at KLXV with an elevation of 9933 and you are hovering over the airport at 135ft AGL and the you go over to Panama city airport at 68 MSL and you are hovering at 10,000ft AGL all other environmental conditions being the same which scenario do you think requires more power.   It's a trick question because they would be the same and that's because of this chart  I know it is probably hard to read but this is what I use to make my performance planning card (ppc) it basically just takes in to consideration your weight, pressure alt and the temp and then it will give you your power required for OGE and IGE. as for the question earlier if you used this chart you would realize that they were both the same pressure altitudes and would require the same power. so for my example in my helicopter at 15c I could weigh 18,250 pounds and hover at that altitude. so going back to the original video I believe that the R22 was to heavy for the conditions and was able to maintain an IGE hover but once he once he crossed over the edge of the hill and entered an OGE hover he was not able to apply enough collective to maintain a hover and descended into the street hitting the light pole. The accident could have been avoided if the pilot would have 1 done a ppc card for his helicopter or 2 performed a hover power check to determine the power margins. So that is that again I am only making an educated guess on the cause of the accident if I find out more I will definitely update this.  Probably next week I will continue with talking about Effective transnational lift (ETL) and I will probably also go into dissymmetry of lift and retreating blade stall FAA Aerodynamics of Flight an alternate to the .203  again feed back and questions are much appreciated

I would like to say welcome to Chaos. It was incredibly fun flying with you and I can tell that you will fit right in with everyone else. The free flight went well I can definitely tell that you are comfortable in the ka-50 I especially liked the return to targets. The mission could have gone better but that was definitely my fault usually I don't crash that much but I am blaming it on the new flight model. anyway good mission I am looking forward to some more.   I will be talking to Bad about get your status changed over to trainee which will give you access to more of the website to include documentation.

Awesome The Crawling Chaos we could always use more pilots and like Bad said we desperately need more content creators. I will be available all this week for any intro flights BK this last week has been pretty hectic.

No problem Bad, now go put your toes back in the sand! Geez you're on vacation man! :D Helios we normally get on about 2000 to 2100 EST. No big deal right now if you don't own any other choppers, most of our missions include the KA-50 and if they don't it can be added quickly. As I said anytime this week is ok with me, whatever works best for you. Just let us know when and I will get you the TS info. Eagle will you be free this week sometime? Moving sucks huh? XD

Sadly, I don't own any other modules. I became very jaded with the entire DCS platform lacking another group to play with, so I never really decided to invest into any other aircraft besides the one that I had already put so much time into. After some time with BSD though, I'll probably reconsider and invest into a western aircraft. As for the introductory flight. My schedule will be cleared up by Monday, I'll know for sure when I'll be able to sit down and have that introductory session with your fellas.  I might be free tomorrow night, but that's tentative. Is there a time that you guys are usually congregating on teamspeak?

Thanks for taking care of this BK. Very impressed by the introduction Helios. We need mission creators badly. As BK mentioned,  I am away until beginning of August hence the lack of flights lately. Once your intro flight done,  you'll get access to the briefing room so you get an idea of the type of missions we are flying and the level of briefing. I know the overcomplex mission design syndrome. My first one was designed for 20 pilots and was a disaster.  BK,  Eagle,  you guys can set up an intro flight for Helios: cold start,  pattern,  data link use, basic radio procedures. You know, the usual stuff. We'll have a Ka50/Mi8 mission the week I am flying back to US.  BaDCrC

Welcome Helios! Nice presentation and you have a lot of experience with the KA-50, you'll fit right in!  BadCrc is on vacation this week but any of us can get you going. Let me know when is a good night for you and we can get together on TS run a introduction mission. Nothing big just a meet and greet, fly around and shoot some stuff. You have come to the right place, we only fly rotors..No fast movers here! I'm an ex Su-27 driver and a Cliff of Dover bomber pilot. I got into the choppers a year or two ago but never really learned how to fly them, until I found the BSD. I'm still a FNG but I'm learning! We have real world chopper pilots in the mix so I am always learning something new. Briefings can be as simple or complex as you want. Some put together a nice power point that I'm sure took as long as the mission to build!(cough Eagle cough) There isn't a template for mission that I know of. More of a you build it, we fly it.  Do you own any of the other choppers? Not a requirement just wondering. The KA-50 is my favorite but lately I've spent more time in the Huey and the Mi-8 just learning to control them. I'm free any night just let me know when is good for you. I'm sure some of the other BSD guys will join in as well. BK

Subject: Helios / The Crawling Chaos ApplicationDate: 7/23/2016Callsign: HeliosSteam: The Crawling ChaosSteam ID URL: http://steamcommunity.com/id/Helios932/AGE: 23Internet Service: 40Mb/s up 11.5mbps downDCS Editor Experience: 30 hours. Created 4 playable missions including: Mountain Search and Destroy, Urban Airfield Defense, Combined Arms Assault. My missions were overly complex originally, but I've run an ArmA 3 clan for years and my concepts of mission design have greatly improved since then. In my experience with the DCS: Editor, I've implemented a number of borrowed community scripts including: Mechanized infantry, helicopter infantry disembarking, and others. While I haven't touched the DCS Editor in years (it's rather tedious) I'm sure that I could pick it up quickly to complete my application requirements at B.S.D.Availability: Most days other than Saturdays at 2000 EST. Will vary between the week.DCS Flight Hours: KA-50 Black Shark: 750+ Hours Preferred Aircraft: Kamov KA-50 Expectations from BSD: Serious fun in my helicopters without annoying zoomies and everything that they ruin bring to a mission. I've always had the feeling that helicopters are largely ignored by the flight sim community, and I've had to retreat to ArmA (and real life) to get any usage out of the many hours I've spent mastering the KA-50. I hope that at the Black Shark Den, I can meet other like-minded and skilled sim-helicopter pilots who want to fly in challenging, diverse and cooperative environments. I have only been able to fly with other KA-50s 5 times in all my time owning the Black Shark since it was first released in 2008. This has been a source of significant frustration for me, and caused me to quit playing multiple times for months at a time. Here hope to not have to cater to people who want to fly planes, and fly with folks who just want rotors. Other Information: Skills which I may comfortably teach others:   Slow and Scramble Take-off, Traffic Pattern, Landing, Basic flight (KA-50) Weapons Employment and countermeasures  (KA-50) Datalink and Abris integration  (KA-50) ABRIS and PVI-800 Waypoint integration  (KA-50) Basic Attack Helicopter tactics  (KA-50) Mission Design Philosophy (How to avoid overcomplex design, How to formulate a mission design) Skills Which I need to learn from BSD: Basic Editor re familiarization (FARPs, qwirks, stability issues) Black Shark Den Standards for briefings, player count, any templates used by Black Shark Den for mission design

My day Saturday unfortunately no flying but still pretty cool to ride in the back while they were doing bambi bucket practice   I also found this at a army surplus store for $250. It's a hgu-56/p which is the same one I use btw. the store owner didn't really know what it was or it's worth so I bought it before he figured it out.  I am probably going to end up selling it I don't really have a need for it I just couldn't resist picking one up for that cheap. If anyone one is interested in buying this I will give you guys an amazing deal.
