For 2019, Black Shark Den is considering creating a EU/UK Branch with more suitable missions times and managed by EU based members (we got it, flying at 2 am is not always fun). BSD EU/UK pilots will benefit from the same access to the dedicated servers, the Discord server, the restricted library, the trainings, the BSD missions library and the BSD Mods Packs. It is initially planned to have one weekly (Saturday night CET) MP mission or training (Early afternoons for US pilots if they want to join). Of course, more weekdays flights are also possible. Interested? Log in and made us hear you!

A very happy Christmas 2018 to all the BSD pilots! We hope you guys had fun flying awesome missions with Black Shark Den! We are working hard to make 2019 even better with more cool missions, more trainings and more pilots flying them!

The Winter sale started on the DCS Shop with up to 50% off on many modules until Jan 7th 2019. This is the best time to start to learn with BSD in 2019 this new chopper you still don't have, or to have your Huey or Mi-8's instrument panel upgraded with a cool NS430 GPS!

Remember too to check out or to add ideas on our special Black Shark Den Xmas Pinterest Board!

Finally, we Miltech5 offered us an early Christmas gift with the startup video of their upcoming BO-105. Needless to say we are all stocked here at BSD. Check it out:

The latest ED newsletter of the year 2017 is confirming a lot of very exciting new modules and maps for 2018. As previously discussed, the upcoming release on DCS 2.5 with the upgraded Caucasus Map will show up end of January 2018. The DCS Mi24P from Belsimtek and the DCS BO-105 are also there. Of course the Strait of Hormuz map is coming but also some "new aircraft carriers". To finish with, improvements of the explosions, clouds, VR, spotting system and FLIR are all excellent news for us rotorheads. The multiplication of chopper modules though will also make even more difficult to maintain fluency on each of them and question about creating squadrons of AH, UH and OH will eventually be raised.

Merry Chrismas BSD!

And a second Christmas for BSD! Hope you guys had some good times on BSD this year! I did! Looking forward for some more cool missions in 2018, new choppers to fly and an awesome new Caucasus map in the upcoming DCS 2.5! Eagle has been working hard in our SOP last month and there's only some editing left to do to have this document released. I know, this was a 2017 objective, so yes, we are a bit late. undecided But despite ups and downs, we made significant progress in forming a nice group of rotorheads with a good coherence in the way we fly together and an improved website better in touch with our pilot's expectations. Let's keep up the good work in 2018!

Hey, just a quick and dirty editing of some video shots from our last mission on NTTR. It was really fun. Many thanks to Fargo for building it!

You all have fantastic holidays!

Release of DCS World 2.5 officially announced for end January 2018.

This is an unusual move from ED to not only announce a release date but also to make it a promise! Well, Matt Wagner did it and this is simply one of the most exciting news of the year!

Letter from PolyChop

A long post was published on ED forum from borchi_2b, PolyChop's dev about what's coming up for them in 2018. Bad news for the Gazelle's sniper which has been scrapped to be replaced by a minigun. Less inspiring than the sniper, but this position should be available in multicrew.

Secondly, a possible implementation of the OH-58 for DCS, to be confirmed, with a 3D model shown. Certainly a long wait for us.

Dear rotorheads

2016 was the launch year of Black Shark Den (February 13th) and since we are a few days away to 2017, now is a good time to give you a quick end-of-year assessment of our 2016 achievements as well as sharing the projects we have for 2017. Any comments, discussions and suggestions are welcome on the Pilot mess at the BSD forum to all pilots and trainees.

2016 Achievements

After 10 months, we have 42 registered members. On this 42 members, 16 are Trainees (meaning they flew at least once with us, for an introduction flight or a mission) and 7 confirmed pilots (flying regularly in complex missions). Among these pilots, we are fortunate enough to have IRL ones and members of some of the ED 3rd party development teams always eager to share their knowledge and insight. We also have 3 members now based in the UK, so we can expect to get more flights on the weekends and in the afternoons (E.S.T). 45 MP missions were flown. This represent a little bit more than 100 flight hours. This Pilots/Members ratio might look low to some of you, but it is actually pretty usual for a virtual squadron. Adding to this, you have to remember that DCS helicopter pilots are a very rare breed in general, and even more in the US for some reason. Helicopters are an order or magnitude more complex to fly than fixed wings (in DCS and IRL). It takes a lot of time just to be able to fly the aircraft correctly, not to mention using the weapons systems in a combat environment. They are flying slow and low and are very vulnerable. 95% of the DCS community just want to jump in and blow up things. DCS is a combat simulator after all.

In parallel to the website, we opened new social channels dedicated to BSD and opened to all members:

  • BSD on Facebook: Members can join and share all their chopper related news (IRL or DCS), screenshots, getting notified about upcoming missions or news posted on the website.
  • BSD on Twitter: Get live notifications about what going on on BSD website.
  • BSD on Youtube: Missions videos uploaded on this channel. All members can upload their best moments during missions.
  • BSD on Pinterest: Join the BSD board and share all the cool pictures (chopper related) with the BSD community. Latest pins are displayed on the website.

New cool tools were also introduced to add realism to our missions:

  • Univers Radio: this addon has been progressively adopted by BSD members as it adds a pretty amazing level of realism in radio management that lacks in DCS World.(tutorial available on the BSD forum)
  • Lotact: at the end of the year, some of us started to test and use this awesome ATC addon for DCS. It even integrates UR.
  • ovGME: this freeware is a modernized version of JSGME. It makes the installation of the mods we are using during our missions really easy, and all these mods are directly available through the BSD repository connected to your ovGME. So updates are fast and easy.(tutorial available on the BSD forum)

S.O.P documentation: we are currently working on a BSD S.O.P to gather and formalize all the IRL operational information we received during our flights. The purpose of this document is to make sure we are all working on the same level during complex missions (operations, radio communications, briefing, emergency,...)

BSD Brevity: the radio brevity will certainly be integrated in the SOP document. Nonetheless, the complete list of terms used during our missions can be found in a searchable table in the BSD library.

2017 Projects

We have a lot of stuff to achieve for 2017. This should be an exciting year;

  • Recruiting: We are always looking to get more regular pilots so we can reasonably count on at least 5 to 8 pilots for each missions. This will allow us to generate more complex ones, involving several helicopter groups (attack, recon, transport).
  • Mission builders: this is a big weakness today in the BSD organization and we need to get at least one more mission builder to make sure we get missions to fly on a regular basis.
  • S.O.P document: We hope to have the first version available early 2017.
  • Multi squadron missions: we have several opportunities to fly with other squads around the world. Once our procedures are in place and applied in regular missions, it will definitively be time to show our expertise to the outside world.
  • Dedicated server: this can be  required in case we are ending up regularly with more than 10 pilots on every mission. I am not expecting this in 2017 but who knows. The cost is not negligible though and it would require to have a system in place to share the expenses. Today, BSD is free to all members.

 BSD is wishing you all a very happy and successful year 2017!

I hope that you all got some nice presents for Christmas. Remember that there are still some days left for ED Christmas sale. This is a good occasion to get the chopper modules you don't have yet:

  • DCS: Mi-8MTV2 Magnificent Eight by Belsimtek is at $29.99 only instead of $49.99
  • DCS: UH-1H Huey by Belsimtek is at $29.99 only instead of $49.99
  • DCS: Combined Arms is at $7.99 only instead of $19.99
  • DCS: Black Shark 2 is at $19.99 instead of $39.99.

Sadly, there is no discount for the Gazelle.

UniversRadio 0.1.2.0-KB update available

Tacno just updated his great radio simulator software for DCS, fixing some bugs (the TS 'hot mike' one is gone) and most importantly, adding the new emergency radio feature, allowing any ejected pilot to get his position and transmit them on 121.500Mhz (EMER V), 423.000Mhz (EMER U) or any pre defined frequency. Please have a look at the way this new emergency radio is working as it will definitively be very useful for our SAR missions.

Mi-8MTV2: The Border Campaign and 1.5.5 Update 2

A new DLC campaign available on ED shop. 15 single player missions. No coop.

In the meantime, the 1.5.5 update 2 is also available with various fixes. For us, mostly the Mi-8:

  • Fix: KORD vertical aiming
  • Fix: Tail boom damage at the beginning of the mission if setting in ME cold start w/o armor, hardpoint, fuel
  • Fix: Fast mission generator makes missions without weapons
  • Fix: Mission Editor, payloads preview: Mi-8 appears without half-doors
  • Tune: rotor cockpit sounds
  • Tune: Main rotor transmission fire occurrence process
  • Flight Manuals (RU/EN): Fix errors, added new bookmarks (on left panel)
  • Training missions: callsign changed to “Player”
  • Mi-8 and UH-1H campaigns: missions cold start fixed

Belsimtek Mi-8 is coming out of beta!

3 years, 8 weeks and 6 days. That's the time it took to get Belsimtek Mi-8 out of beta. Not that this marvelous module was particularly bugged at all, but the most annoying part of it is that no English manual was available. At least, not a complete and final one. So we had, for years, to rely on the community to figure out how to fly this incredible machine. But the wait is over. BST just uploaded the precious document HERE. And to celebrate this, ED uploaded a shiny new video:

OMG! Side gunners! Yeaaaah!

  • Sling-load gameplay upgraded: new loads were added (8 so far, more to come with updates) with their dynamics tuned, sling damage upon contact with helicopter implemented, crew chief sling-load operation voice commands added.
  • Released model of rope damage with helicopter
  • Released model of cargos damage with world objects
  • AI door and rear gunners added ( Door gunned with “KORD” 12.7 mm machine gun and rear gunner with PKT machine gun 7.62 mm), with ability to play as door gunner. Different predefined settings for combined TrackIR and mouse interactions for view and machine gun controls were added.
  • if in addition to existing input devices (keyboard, mouse, joysticks) there is a head tracking device (TrackIR), views and gun can be controlled in three different ways without the need for self settings by user
  • Reworked helicopter dynamic according to taken damage or systems failures (tail rotor fails dynamic, tail breakaway, tail rotor transmission fin damage);
  • Destructive overload was fine-tuned (gear break possibility, tail rotor breakaway), gear friction, damage system from projectiles hits tuned, crew cabin armor implemented;
  • Cockpit sound was tuned and fixed according to real Mi-8 pilots feedback;
  • Gun Camera added.
  • Special options for module were changed, including addition of joystick without springs and FFB option.
  • Incorrect changes in camera pitch caused by airframe shake fixed
  • Pilot’s guide was reworked, every procedure illustrated, systems descriptions added (including frequently asked questions on forums), typos and inaccuracies fixed (guide volume increased by 100%).
